my friend has an old yale with a flathead four banger. it drives ok but if you hit a function like tilt or lift, it starts to miss real bad. feathering the control dosent help nor does adding throttle. it also runs on propane.
It is old, you can't expect too much from it. Forklifts are not expensive now, and I think it's time for your friend to buy a new one.
What the H kind of an answer is that? Maybe you should load up a brand new one in a container and ship it to him for free if they are so cheap and you have so much money.. That said, post a model number of the Yale and maybe we can help a little better. If this is a GC model, the distributor cap and wires were real close to the underside of the seat hood and maybe the ignition wires are shorting. Brand name of propane system (ie Impco, Century or....) and pictures would help.
BillG, I started to reply this morning exactly the same as you. I thought I'd better refrain. Aggression therapy u know. That new one that he'd send over wouldn't last 6 months, much less the 40+ years that ole Yale has mustered so far. Just shootin from the hip here, but are you sure there's no moisture in the LPG system? I just remember my dad cussin the old John Deere B model. My mother was less than impressed with my 5 year old vocabulary.
It drives Ok? Will it pull to a stall smoothly if you driving it along and ride the brakes while running a good constant trottle? Lift or Tilt: Do both affect it the same. Any attachment? A side shift or clamp?? If so, do they affect it? Like BillG... Post a Model and Serial #. Also engine make... Yale use Continental F-163's but had some 5000 lb pneumatics with IH (Farmall "C") engines. Never heard of hydraulic restriction/loading making an engine "miss". Lose power, or stall down. Tuff ole trucks they were.
thanks guys, i should be going by his place this week. i will get some numbers.
looks like the continental engine in there. spec 8255. the lift is a model. g/l 51c050nat083. serial # 287498. and i forgot to look at the propane system....just great. another brain fart. lol
This is why I can't stand working on spark ignition engines. :tong Problem can be ignition, but most likely fuel problem, no way to say for sure commenting on a website. Really hard for me to recommend a method for troubleshooting. This is not a definitive suggestion, but if engine will start easy, runs smooth at idle, but goes nutty when you try to throttle up or engine under load, most likely a propane delivery problem. Propane vaporizer is always a suspect, lock off valve is as well. And the carb is really a suspect depending on what type it is.
this machine doesent seem to have the propane filter that im used to seeing. it starts fine, idles smooth, and revs up nice. im not real good with propane systems due to a lack of working with them.
Just for starters: Check the fuel tank. Is it FULL of liquid? Remove and heft it , should be heavy. Crack the little bleeder screw and you should get a hard spew of gas billowing out WHITE as it hits the atmosphere. Replace the tank and be sure the pilot guide hole in the bottle end valve guard is DOWN , or on the post sticking up from the mount if it still there. Check the coolant level. Be sure it is FULL. . All this is to be sure there is gas; not vapor, and the liquid is being turned in to vapor at the vaporizer. Is is not uncommon for a truck to crank, run, drive around on vapor. But when loaded; pushing a pallet, towing a trailer, it had no power. After cranking vaporizer should be warm to the touch, indicating water and liquid flow. If cold, it is most likely freezing up inside and restricting/not delivering full flow on to the carb. If these are OK, remove the line to carb, with bottle gas turned on, key switch on, you should get a steady low pressue flow of gas out the hose. When all these check out: Lift the seat, remove the distributor cap, rotor and points and condenser. Wiggle the distibutor shaft to see if it may have worn the bushing and you are not getting any cam action. Go to NAPA and get new parts and a set of wires WITH WIRE IN THEM , not graphite type. Get a set of plugs too and gap at .032 Put it all on (set points at 028-030 gap) and try it. Luck
ok i did not (get a steady low pressue flow of gas out the hose.) in fact there seemed to be nothing coming out. if i hit the button on the vaporizer something comes out. it is an ipmco system and i did find the filter. it apeared to be ok.
IMPCO system - Push button + GOOD... Is is a primer. You problem will be in ignition. Does it have point and condenser or a PER LUX add on system? Hold.. Will advise further.
its been awhile but so goes it. i changed the distribiter cap and rotor so it runs better. the hydraulic pump is somehow sucking air into the system. i changed the inlet hose but no luck. i noticed that if i load it tilting that it kills the engine like when the cylinder reaches the end on its stroke. if i feather it at the end of the stroke it will suck air into the system. the oil gets real foamy and you can hear the air going through the system.
