Just read a great book about the Diesel engine. Not a repair service type book. This book is about the man who designed the first diesel engine. And guess what, his name was Rudolf Diesel ! It's a period of history when engines are mostly Steam engines, and there is an idea for the internal combustion engine. The book is called - The mysterious case of Rudolf Diesel . Mysterious because the diesel engine was important in the war between England and Germany in the development of submarines and other industry, and Rudolf Diesel mysteriously disappeared. This is a great history lesson, and much of what went on then, is the same thing going on now with the development of electric vehicles and improved batteries.
This does look interesting! Thanks! The Mysterious Case of Rudolf Diesel — Douglas Brunt - Official Author Website “yanks back the curtain on the greatest caper of the 20th century in this riveting history.” — Jay Winik, New York Times best selling author of 1944: FDR and the Year that Changed History. douglasbrunt-author.com
it’s a recent publication. Did not know. I’ll check it out. It would be interesting to read about any new theories about Rudolph’s demise. Thanks for sharing.
I first read about rudy in I guess 1969. Many theories about his disappearing act over the years. I think any new info or ideas are doubtful. But it makes book sales more likely in these times if a mystery with possible dirty deeds done dirt cheap can inspire the buyer. One thing is for sure greedy people are corrupt people.
I sure hope it has Detroit's in it!
I think the book is more about the history of coming out with a new power source and how that all happens. The questions we all have about electric vehicles today are the same back then when the Diesel engine was proposed. And as Truck shop says, corporate greed and corruption are big, but so is the need for corporate seed money and government help.
Now you've done it----Hugo Gulder along with Man,Krupp are responsible for that disaster.
Don't believe all you read about R.Diesel and inventing the Compression Ignition engine in 1888.
Don't believe all you read on the internet in 2024.
You know those Germans make good stuff.
Tony is correct, the diesel story gets more interesting when you find out Herbert Akroyd, an Englishman, patented a compression ignition engine in 1890. Rudolf did not build his first diesel engine until 1892. Should the ‘Diesel’ Really Be Called an ‘Akroyd’ Most people think that the internal combustion engine was invented in the late 1800s, but the principle of internal combustion was demonstrated by Dutch scientist Christian Huygens way back in 1673. In the Huygens engine a piston was blown upwards in a cylinder by a gunpowder explosion, Allan... outbacktravelaustralia.com.au It's kind of like how the Wright Bros claimed to be the first to fly. They only got the kudos because they were very good at maintaining the media output. As has been said before, one only has to interview two eyewitnesses to a car crash, to start developing serious doubts about the truth of every event recorded in history.
Vince says you'll like his nuts in the Slap Chopper. * Any book any documentary is only as good as the investigative info used at time, going alllllllllllllllllllll the way back when the first picture/graphic was scribbled on a wall in a cave. Trouble with todays outburst of info---it's too pinpointed & also full of miss-quotes. * In comparison---a restored antique car or even a more modern car like a 68 chevelle, 99% are restored way past what was actual when built, too perfect. Society is enthralled with perfection in a unperfect world. All the engine inventors mentioned above are long since dead and really are past with who did what, when & where. How about agreeing that they all contributed to the modern insanity of the diesel engine in 2024.
