Yes. Railroad maint. shops were not really set up to do accurate work that gearing requires. Boring brass journal boxes and steam cylinders o.k. So the first electrification sort of hybridized the drive train. And, as you can see, the motor can't fit between the wheels like on modern loco's. Have a look at the GG1 with it's 2 per axle motors and a quill set-up.

  2. #2Willie B2025-06-07 07:41

I'm surprized to see no gearing at all.

  3. #3DDoug2025-06-07 11:52

    That's the idea.

  4. #4Willie B2025-06-08 07:06

Are these DC motors? How is speed controlled? Got no choice but to have the same stroke on motor & wheels.

  5. #5DDoug2025-06-08 07:30

Yes, the linked article mentioned 600 vdc How is speed controlled ? while not wanting to handle all the primary current, techniques would have been field weakening, series/parallel on the windings, etc. And maybe a big honkin' set of resistors for the lowest speed (starting)

  6. #6Shimmy12025-06-08 10:44

There is gearing built in. The throw on the motor is smaller than the throw on the idler, and that throw is substantially smaller than the wheels. I'm not going to take the time to estimate, but it could be 1.5:1 for the first step, and maybe 2:1 to the wheels? I'm sure I'm way off, but you get the idea.

That's a very cool piece of engineering. Here's a Scottish invention from around the same time. This is the Bennie Railplane, which was electrically powered through a pusher propeller, and suspended from an overhead track. In the 1930's George Bennie was aiming for the railplane to travel at up to 120mph, then much faster in due course when the propellers were driven by larger electric motors. https://oldmachinepress.com/2014/07/14/bennie-railplane/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bennie_Railplane As you can guess, it never made it into production.
