Here is a few pics of my buddy hauling a big transformer from Arizona to Colorado. This load weighed around 1 million pounds. This trailer will go to 20 feet wide and can handle a whole heck of a lot more weight. He was telling me when they hit the steep hill they hook a prime mover on the front to assist in the pulling.
Wow, I have never seen anything like that before, amazing
They have something similar but smaller parked near me. I cant believe how much those transformers weigh compared to their size.
alot of copper and aluminum!!! i guess those are electrolite filled?
What company does your friend work for?
big transports check out www.diamondheavyhaul.com they have all kinds of big trailers and some video of them makeing turns and getting around town. opcorn
Dang!
Southwest Crane and Rigging.
All transformers that large are shipped empty, with dry air or nitrogen inside the tank, that one that in the pictures has to be 500+ MVA (which is huge in the substation utility world). Once they are delivered and assembled they are put under a vacuum for a few days to dry out the insulation, then they are filled with transformer oil (similar to mineral oil). Things that make a transformer heavy... It is wound with an incredible amount of copper. The core is a giant mass of laminated steel. The tanks are beefy enough to withstand full vacuum. Those are some good pictures, the largest move I have ever seen first hand was a 420MVA transformer that was about 400,000 pounds without truck or trailer. I think Sheedy moved it, it was hauled to Fremont, CA on a similar style but smaller trailer. The thing about moving transformers it that they are fragile, and heavy.
I think sheedy call's their push pull setup T-Red. They keep that whole setup out at the port of stockton.
I believe we only got these guy's here in Norway. (there is some other guy's with platform trailers though) Trailer loads 500t, 1000' Lbs. Their custom made boat has a loading ramp that handles 500t. Max deckload is 2000t/4000'Lbs They also got a railroad wagon with 18 axles that can handle 210t, apr 420'Lbs. They got 50 special made harbours around the coast of Norway that can handle their boat and trailer. They parked the old Faun when they got the Merc, but had to take it out 2 weeks later. There is not so many of those made. More pics here: http://www.statnett-transport.no/bildegalleri/ or here: http://www.statnett-transport.com/image_gallery
WOW. Those are some impressive rigs. I would love to catch a glimpse of those going down the road!
I have not seen that trailer there in awhile...I think its been moved:beatsme
Those folks delivered 17 superloads to the GM stamping plant here in town. Loads came from Burns Harbor IN via Lansing MI. (Check it out on a map - not a direct route ) The company is a class act, a real pleasure to do business with (I got to review and approve the permit apps )
seen one of the prime mover kenwotrhs driving down to the main yard from stockton the other day. heck they probobly cut it up for scrap. it was most likely paid for.
im glad to see some pics of that move but you missed the KW:beatsme
Hi there mktef Thanks for those pics and info on those transporters and ships very intersting

Lampson in Australia .220 tonne
Very special truck and amazing pictures! I am sure it can not be fast otherwise the brake will very hot and the tyres will be spoiled.
CPS; Glad u enjoyed it! Theese guy's transport all over Europe, maybee u'll see them one day. They are stationed on the docks of the ABB factory in Drammen. They produse the goods and just pull it out onto the boat.(Not shure if they still do it theese days, but did some years ago.) Their boat is filling its time in the North sea, transporting the real heavy parts out to the oilplattforms. They got three trucks, a Faun, a MAN and the new Merc. Good homepage with a lot of pics, Norwegian language gives u more pics than the english one. Added a pic from Estonia. Tripple B? check the length...
Nice pics MKTEF, Martin. Once again outdone by somebody on the forum. Oh well, here is a few pics of the Prime Mover that went with the load. We were fortunate enough to assist these guys up some steep hills. This truck had a 5 spd automatic with a 4spd brownie. Our driver was telling me that when this super load was pulling just a gradual hill, and the trucks got onto the solid line on the highway, they would actually spin out and loose traction and have to get the Prime Mover out to get them going again:beatsme. I got to drive it back to there yard today and boy she had some torque. 26 miles per hour was the top speed for her though!! Had the turning radius of a freight train. You can bet I had a big smile for those six miles I was behind the wheel.
For the age of that trailer it looks to be in great shape....Judging from the name plate and the pins in the deck and goose neck it is prob in the 1984-1986 range right?
how much does that block weigh? got traction i hope!:drinkup
tractomas here is a link to a quite impressive heavy haulage truck :notworthy http://www.tnn.co.uk/BigLorryBlog/plonearticle.2007-09-18.4520616810 cheers graham
Those big trucks sure look impressive but Lampson are pulling the same weight transformers with off the shelf 600 hp Macks. Some loads go clear across Australia into the desert mine sites and the Macks work well.Another company ,Bradshaws do just as well with off the shelf type Kenworths.Same job for a whole lot less capital outlay. Got a real cool video of a big heavy haulage company (that is no longer around)called Brambles pulling a big shovel (400 t)into a mine site in the middle of nowhere. The Macks are in their glory untill it rained and the red dirt turns to mud.But 2 big graders and a big Cat wheel loader were lashed on to pull them through.Maybe the 8x8 or 10x10 would have been better but nothing quite beats the note of the mighty Mack 550hp V8 at full tilt.
I think that trailer is a 1989 Chaz. It's been really good to us over the years.
Nice photos Martin! The huge Cometto beam trailer seem the ex Megalift! Do You know if Lampson in Australia still have a huge Kenworth 850 6x4 prime mover?
Welcome to Heavy Equipment Forums pesanti! :drinkup
They just moved a transformer through my town. It Moved from Portsmouth, NH to Londonderry, NH near the Manchester-Bostn regional airport. The only difference was they had 2 Massive Autocars with train engines under the hood move the transformer. It only reached a top speed of 10 mph. But, they were BIG!!
Yes they are ex Megalift but they go back further than them to Walter Wrights and the first owners Fleetexpress. Yes Lampson do have a couple of real big Kenworths .They are used mainly on site but i have seen them on the road up in Queensland pulling a generator up a big hill. That was impressive with 8 trucks(2 o9f these big Kennys 1x mack an 3 other Kenworths pulling and a Mack and a Kenworth pushing)on the job.The road authorities only issue a permit for them to travel only on the big hills When they have done their job they mist be put on a low loader to move.
