windowbarn ยท 2011-03-29 18:38

We just sold our Cat 287b skidsteer too someone and he just called and said after he unloaded it he was driving it and all of a sudden the thing revved up without him trying and white smoke was pouring out. Also coolant was coming out of the reservoir and the oil fill cap popped off. It was working fine for us and now this happens, any idea what it could be??

It sounds like a blown head gasket or worse.

What is your mechanical ability? The issues i see, Revving up by its self. Did it start burning oil after something let loose? something failed in the injection pump? or just simple the throttle cable stuck. Coolant coming out of the reservoir, combustion in the cooling system, blown head gasket or a cracked head or cylinder. Maybe just overheated and its dumping the coolant. Oil cap blowing off, combustion gasses in the crankcase. Something failed, cracked. worn rings if it didn't have the other issues. I would first check the oil, drain some out and look for coolant or debris. Pull the valve cover, make sure the valves are still there and the springs are not broken, push rod still under the rocker arms. Turn it over and see it the valve train is working. Any abnormal sounds. Turbo inlet hose, pull off and check the turbo, is the impeller still there and complete. After that you will need to get more in depth to find out what happened. As for price, That depends on what happened but i would say its not going to be cheap.

The engine in my 248 blew and I checked with Cat about repair, it was going to be well in excess of $10,000 to replace the engine.

They only hada problem with the turboed 2.2L Perkins engines over 2 years ago and it has been fixed by a new metal head gasket. The 287 runs a 3.3L Mitsubishi (banded CAT) and they have been supremely reliable.

They are still experimenting with new styles of head gaskets. early last year i put 4 on different machines, same customer though. These were sent to us from cat to use. We replaced them even though the old one had not failed.

Looks like the turbo went out. Any idea's on where too get one?? Sounds like a $5k job too get replaced. Also where is the best place too get the owners manual? and one more thing, the skidsteer has heat but does not have a/c, is that normal, thought usually they have a/c and heat together?? Thanks for all the help

are you sure it doesn't have AC? If the turbo failed, did it put debris into the engine? What caused it to fail? Did it starve of oil? Did something go through it? Replacing a turbo is a simple job, you should be able to do it yourself.

Where the fan speed is there is only a red mark and usually with a/c they have a blue mark with the red as well?? Not sure exactly how they diagnosed the turbo failed, I should find out. He just said the turbo failed. Hopefully i can find out and let ya know.

On my 287 there is a switch to the right of the temp dail for the a/c, it,s clearly marked and looks the same as the fan switch
