Im a new member here, trying to find answers . And this looks like a good place to start.. Just purchased a 1980 case 1450 dozer. It worked great for about 6hrs then, just layed down it wont pull. Ive changed the lower filter, then the top filter. The seller came over and put on another charging pump an still nothing..At an idle i put it in gear then tracks seem to want to tighten up but nothing. Their was alittle aluminum shavings in the filters when i got them out, the trans pressure is at zero, but before i did notice it flucuating. Sure could use some help.. Still learning and( I sure wont drop a belly pan alone again):beatsme... ,
I am no expert on the 1450, but I would think if there is no trans pressure that it is one of three things. No oil supply to the charge pump, charge pump is faulty, or massive internal leak in the trans causing no pressure. When you changed the charge pump, was there a good flow of oil from the tank? When the supply line was removed there should have been a rush of oil from the line. Baz
One possiblility is torque convertor has gone south.
Check your suction screen for blockage
welcome to HEF, with the engine running, have a close listen around the transmission control valve area. They sometimes blow out a gasket & make a buzzing noise as the oil escapes the galleries. Short of fitting a flow meter to it you can't tell for sure if you have a problem there or not - but that's where I would place an odds on bet.
their was a good flow to charge pump I tried bleeding the lines at the pump there was pressure upon cracking loose the line , where is the tranny control valve located top or bottom trans.
Is that the lower filter on the pressure side, i changed that one. Had to remove the skid plate and lost about 5 gals oil. Is their one i have missed somewhere else.. I do have a operators manual coming in from ebay, it will help. Ive been finding the location of stuff from case on their skimmatics.
control valve on top
A picture is worth a thousand words:thumbsup
yep, i seen it under the seat thanks..
You say the dozer will not pull, does it go in reverse ok? Just wondering because you just said it won't pull. Seen many Case dozers pitch the snap ring on either the forward or reverse clutch. Or as Alrman said check the valve, you might hear it if it's leaking. A good flowmeter and a couple gauges would tell you right away where your problem lies.
Go to the front of the control valve, there is a large spool in the center, above it is a screw and nut, back this out, under this there is a orffice, take a straight blade screw driver, remove this and blow it out, also small screen in center port top of valve body under fitting that connects hose to dash gauge, the screen and orffice need to be clean,or it will not move, the big spool in the center is the modulator and if sticking can cause the same issues, always block tracks/and set parking brake ,to be safe.
thanks guys, i'll get on it.. yes it wont move in forward or reverse. I'll check the valve i have a print that i printed out from case where their at.
well found the problem, got a mech. to come look at it and he said that the seals in the transmission are gone.. pressure is blowing by the pistons... thanks for the help ,, hope Santa's got one in his bag.. does it generally cost about 10k to repair this..
Welcome to the board rodnock, sorry to read about your tranny, good luck gettin her going
rodnocker, for a 1450 not to drive - & the piston seals to be the problem - that would mean ALL the piston seals would be gone at the same time - there are 10 clutch packs - this is not possible. There would have to be some kind of drive in low or high range on the left or right side. I don't know your mechanics background & how he was come to this conclusion - was there pressure testing or flow testing? Before you pull out the trans - do yourself a favour & remove the control valve & strip it If you rebuild the transmission you will have to reseal the valve anyway. I'm sure this is where your problem exists.
alrman, there is no drive in any gear from the tower what so ever but, pulling the control and cleaning it is a good idea. the mechanic didnt use no meters on it , i quess he was going by what he experience was and since their was alumium shavings in the oil, but then again the valve might be stopped up... thanks
rodnocker, When you say "shavings in the oil" - do you mean just a few shavings, or is the oil silver in colour? The metal you found in the screen - describe it's shape & size. How much was there? teaspoon / tablespoon full ? It's not unusual to find stuff like this that is not related to current problem. -eg. pump may have failed some time ago & screen may not have been cleaned out. Let us know your how you go -
