Hey members i am having a problem with a d6h 8e2473 not moving forward or backward. thing is i have never dealt with dozers before and with the current pandemic our island is in a total lockdown so no help from the dealer. This dozer has been neglected by the owner and only did work when it broke down or was needed . i hope the serial i provided is the correct one as i searched all over and only found those at the back under the deisel tank. since we are totally locked down for the next month i decided to try my hand at fixing it ,just hoping its simple as the filters or a bad pump anyone can offer some tips on stuff to check ?
pull the magnetic strainer out and see what is in it you need to drop the belly pan and it is on the right side
do i need to drain the sump pan ? forgive me for the noob questions but im totally new to dozers
Yes you do. The compartment behind the cover that holds the screen in place is the "oil pan" for the transmission. Expect to get somewhere in the region of 100 litres of oil out of it. Back to your OP. 8E2473 is not the machine Serial Number. Try taking a look at the engine and see if you can find a S/No plate on it. A machine S/N can usually be tracked by using the engine number.
I just pulled a strainer on a 1KD and did not have to drain the sump it was a few gallons low though
I guess a lot will depend on if the machine is parked facing downhill, in which case most of the oil could well end up on the ground.
will look for it tomorrow bro as im going to try to get some work done to it .. really appreciate the help
i found these pics in another thread so im gonna print and walk with it .. hopefully it is exact where it is .. the one labeled 21 is that the tranny at the back with a small plate of 4 bolts?
21 is at the back at drawbar you have to drain sump to service this one the other one is under your feet as you sit in seat have to drop belly pan to get to it
thanks for the help , i spent some time on the machine today and found both screens , the one at 21 and 7 , did not find 27 tho . pulled the filters and cleaned the screens , found they were not too dirty nor plugged but the oil was really black and there was some plastic debris . i did find 2 plunger type rods with seals that were missing , could that have contributed to it? Right now i have to wait till next week when the country covid restrictions are lifted so i can get cat recommended oil as the dealer is closed.is there any substitute oil i can use to run in the meantime before i do another flush? I have also attached some pics of what i found .
Did the oil smell burned.? Black oil plus those particles you found spell trouble in my book. Suggest you remove the transmission filter and cut it open. There are videos on YouTube showing how to do it. You’re looking for particles like grains of sand in the bottom of the pleats of the filter media.
yes i did remove the trans filter,it's the fourth pic i posted , and yes there was a sand like material almost like grease, what does that spell? clutches ? after changing everything my next step was to add oil and check my pressures and then proceed from there , am i missing a step?
Were those rods out they plug into the valve body for pressure testing. you can use 30 wt motor oil like for diesels Rotella or another brand
Thanks for the reply, the rods were in place but seals were disintegrated and missing , only motor oil we have is cat 15w40 can that work?
That sand material sounds like burned up clutches. Cut the filter open an see what it is like inside. Here’s a how to. Depending on what you find removing the transmission is the likely next step.
You can use 15 40 to try it out and flush it
where do i check pressures and what pressures do i look for and what is the range that i work with ?
Main pressure is the plug at the top of the filter housing P1 and P2 are checked at the plugs where you took the rods out main around 325 -350 p1 and p2 are 20-30 lbs lower than main pressure
See attachment. Start from about Page 10. You will need at least a couple of accurate gauges capable of reading up to 500psi.
thanks guys i really do appreciate the help
SO update time , filled the trans with cat 15w40 and started , moves on 2 and 3 but stays put on 1 , which leads me to believe number 1 clutches are burned up . question to those who have rebuilt trannys , do i have to order every part seperate or does cat have a rebuild kit? like do they sell the clutch pack seperate ? now that i have diagnosed the problem im looking into a rebuild. id hate to teardown and have to wait for parts or order parts and found out i have to wait for a missing part . which will be more feastable ??
Very likely clutches if no forward or reverse in that range. A pressure check should be done, make sure the valve travel is good as well. If it is a bare back machine its a pretty fast easy deal to get the transmission out. Call your cat dealer and ask those questions. A wait for parts should not be very long for a Cat.
It's only one clutch. The 1st speed clutch does both forward and reverse. whether the machine moves backwards or forwards in 1st speed depends on whether the forward or reverse direction clutch is engaged along with the 1st speed clutch. There are a total of 5 clutches in the transmission - F, R, 1, 2, & 3. Here's the deal. Without a Serial Number for the machine (which we've been into already) there's no way of getting hard & fast info about what is available. However from my experience Cat generally only sells two kits, and even then they are not available in the case of every transmission type. One kit contains all the bearings necessary to rebuild the transmission, the other kit contains all the gaskets & seals necessary for the rebuild. Everything else has to be ordered individually. Here is your dilemma as I see it. First and foremost you need to find a Serial Number somewhere (even on the engine, a machine S/N can be found from that) or you run a serious risk of getting wrong parts. Secondly you could order absolutely everything that you THINK you need for a complete transmission rebuild, only to find something like a damaged planetary carrier needs replacing that you didn't factor into your original parts list. In your situation I would be disassembling the transmission first and making the parts list once it was all in pieces. we can help you with the required procedures to remove, disassemble, reassemble, & reinstall the transmission. You're having a laugh aren't you...? There are multiple recent threads on HEF complaining about Cat parts delivery times. "Just in time" has been replaced by "Maybe some time" IMHO. There are two chances of a Cat dealer having parts in stock (or with a reasonable delivery time) these days, Slim and none - and Slim left town long ago.
Nige, its been awhile ordering Cat parts for me, I didn't know. I said clutches because thinking of multiple disks per pack.
As a former Cat dealer person I wish it was not this way, but the bean counters are firmly in control and that’s what you end up with. All I know is that in my former job it would have been almost impossible to succeed (aka keep the customer happy) in today’s business climate. I think that’s a shame.
Thanks for the help fellas, but i am a bit confused, if the machine moves foward and reverse in gears 2 and 3 but not in 1 , will it be the number 1 clutches and not the foward and reverse clutches ?
That’s what I said above. Based on your symptoms 1st speed clutch has failed.
