Ok long story short i have to do a paper on wheel loaders, i need to compare two different loaders. Basically what loader size whould i need to move scrap metal, and if you were to buy one which brands would you consider and what would be some of the criteria they would HAVE to have. The two im interested in would be cats and deeres. The sooner the help the better lol, papers do tommorow and i procrastinated lol Thanks Cody

what size operation? how much material must be moved? without knowing this it is hard to suggest a machine size. P.S " Failure to plan on your part does not constitute an emergency on mine".

umm hard to say, it would be for padnos iron and metal here in michigan, lots of material, all day.

mr smurf. there are tons of variables. to some, 10 semi loads is "lots", others don't blink at 400 a day. is the loader loading out rail cars? feeding shredders? stockpiling? an old 920 cat may never break a sweat in some yards, whereas a 992 would have a hard time coping with others. give us some more information about duties and layout, and the brain trust here can help for sure.

yes feeding shredders, loading rail cars and stockpiling, keep in mind they do have excavators with mags on them, i just need a good all around loader, and it doesnt have to be exactly what they would need, i just need to similar loaders, and minimum requiremtents the customer would need. Thanks again and sorry for my lack of knowledge on the subject at hand.

well, i have ran pretty much every cat loader up to a 992 and most the deere line up. in a scrap yard i would imagine you would want to run foam filled or solid tires. i don't think the deeres are strong enough to survive that kind of abuse, imho. if i were ordering a loader with the info you have provided i would go for a 988 cat. they are heavy, tough, and big enough to load a railcar comfortably.

yea foam filleds are a must, whats some of the criteria you would have to have on the machine.

ok so the 988 cat it is, and i think the komatsu WA600-6 are good matches

well, i would co for a large g/p bucket with a b.o.c.e. onboard scale, automatic lube, all the guarding you can get, and, most importantly, sirius radio

Scrap yards are mostly load and carry operations. Compare speeds in each gear. Maybe one unit may be in the middle of the tach in second gear and the other will be at the top of the engine rpm. If you are running a load and carry operation with a big machine you need to think about the optional axle oil coolers. Lifting power is a must for scrap as you don't know what is going to come in. How do they compare? Bucket type and size need to be specified up front. Do you need clamps? If so you need a third valve and maybe even a fourth valve. That brings up a quick coupler. What about more counterweight? Can't use calcium in the tires if you foam fill them. What operator amenities do you need? I think air conditioning is pretty much a necessary item anymore. Some machines have it as standard equipment, some don't. Guarding? Pick a big bucket up in the air with scrap metal hanging out all over and you are going to be paying for wind shields and maybe even damage on a cab. Don't forget about the bottom of the machine either. Are you going to work more than one shift? If so extra lights are necessary. This will get you started. If you get all this figured out bring up the performance items. Horsepower, fuel economy, recommended maintenance and so on. Remember to price out certain items such as filters and any special oils any of these machines might need. As you can see the list is virtually endless. Pick up a Cat performance manual if you can. It will lay all this out and more. Good Luck!
