When you are looking for someone to manage or oversee a quarry, how do you find and choose the right person? Are there any metrics, such as production or past achievements, that you use? And if you are a manager, how do you promote yourself for a job? Do you highlight any specific metrics, such as production, fuel consumption, or cost reduction?

You would hope that some experience or knowledge particularly in maint and repair would be helpful as well as some knowledge of men. Sadly often not the case today.

Knowlege of pre emptive as well as preventive which are 2 different things is good. My focus would be on maintenance type that would be anal about catching it before it turned in to big event. This does NOT mean simply look for the smartest guy you can find.

I had this discussion the other day. Neighbor says, I would run those old belts as long as I could or buy 2 and put them on the shelf in case I needed them. I said,,, didnt go to the trouble and cost today to park the last 2 belts this machine will even need on the shelf.

You go to the general manager.... your "Boss's Boss" and throw your boss under the bus, pointing out all his faults and mistakes, and show you could do it better.......

Check with a Safety Department somewhere if they have someone they want to offload. Usually Safety never likes to fire people, so offering to slide a person sideways into Operations makes perfect sense. Well at least at the corporate level it does........

Find someone that won't make the employees miserable. Then you won't have to be searching for replacement employees.

Do what they do for other management and medical positions. Ask for references from at least 3 of their former bosses and get them to sign a consent if required. Here you have to get a former employer to sign a consent in order to give out any info on your employment. It's illegal to give out any employment info without consent. If they did a good job a former boss should give a good reference and possibly wish they stayed. References from other employee's who worked with or under them is good too.
