I am wanting to buy my first tractor and scraper, not sure on sizes, 7-9 yard scraper? Any thoughts on tractors, and sizes to pull it? I have an excavating business, but do not have a scraper yet. Still adding to my collection. Thanks for any input!
A scraper of 7 to 9 yards you can probably pull with a D6. Be careful when pairing up the tractor and scraper so the tread width of the tractor and cut width of the scraper match up. Seen lots of guys neglect the last factor here and live to regret it.
old fella once told me 20 horse per yard is a good rule of thumb. Mfwd is a must also
pulling Cat 70 with D7E and G series here. That means 180 and 200 horse. Pulling Cat 80 with D8K. That means 300 horse. That means 16.37 horse per yard on D7E, 18.19 with the G an 16.67 horse per yard with D8K pulling Cat 80. Run out of traction before power here in some of the things we do. Get into heavy limestone shale usually wind up with blade on the D7G pushing D8K and Cat No. 80
It depends on the scraper on how what size tractor. When I used to work for my dad we used a D-7 to pull a 60 scraper and a D-6C to pull a 8 yard LeTournau scraper and working side by side they could go round for round both boiling over. It has all to do with the cutting edge, and how much the end bits a in the ground slowing you up wasting HP. Nobody considers production like my dad did.
jd 8100 with big singles pulling torq 1350 with extensions. pulls just fine used several different tractors on it and this is what stuck with . great combo
