How to tell when there is enough wear on the track bushing and pins that will need turning. Also is this a big job, and is it very expensive to have it done?
I can tell by look/feel on our crawlers, if you do not have experience the local shop undercarriage guy can measure for you. If you go to far you may ruin the bushings and that will cost alot more than a turn. We have a portable track press guy in our area that comes to the job or shop, that saves the trucking. Cost is reasonable for a turn, sometimes you need a half set of bolts and segments. Don't know what you're working on. If you are near a city check the phonebook under undercarriage or tracks there may be an independent track shop, they are usually cheaper than the dealers.
You basically measure the diameter of the bushing with a caliper. The manufacturer will have a book somewhere that will tell you how much wear you have. Generally you turn the pins and bushings on sealed tracks when they are approximately 65 - 70% worn. SALT tracks are handled a little different. Check out this web site for a full explanation. Go down to the training section and check out the threads on tracks. http://www.constructioncentric.com/forum/YaBB.pl Good Luck!
