Our diesel technology class was given a cat motor grader to work on and get operational if possible. The only identifying number we can find is the engine serial number. It is 8T14140. Would this also be the machine serial number? We think it may be a model 12, again nothing to identify on the machine tags or stickers. Any help would be appreciated!
One of the Cat experts should be along shortly. Some pics. would probably help.
It should be a #12 with a D318 6 cyl-4 1/2” bore engine. The machine serial# should be toward the front of the frame on the LH side not far from the front axle. If the tag is gone, maybe it will be stamped in the frame. Sometimes the engine and machine serial numbers will not match if the engine has been changed, especially on a machine thats 60+ years old
Certainly the engine S/N corresponds to a #12 grader. First production of the 8T was 1947 but with a S/N of 14000+ the engine will be way newer than that. To the OP - make another couple of posts. As a new member once you have three posts you can start uploading photos, then maybe someone can start pointing you in the direction of where the machine S/N should be.
The machines s/n is at front system on the frame . When you stand near the wheels at front you will see it
I'd like to be in the gallery when those students start messing around with the magneto on that machine.
