it seems that i am changing fuel filters more often then past years, could be water in the tanks or just crap in my fuel trailer or maybe the fuel sucks.so in order to protect the high dollar fuel pumps, most of my stuff is early 2000 model tier1,2,3 max, i want to add some extra filter protection what are some of you guys using, is a stanadyne fm100 a good option for a fuel water separator, or just a throw away steel wix 33033 inline. what have you done to help with your fuel filter systems??
Depends on what's on each one now. First and foremost, all my metal filters are replace by these, so I can keep an eye on them. This one is 5/16". 3971 is 1/4". Pick a unit and list the existing filters, in order, from tank to injection pump. And, depending on the application, I'll install fm100 units. This is primarily on units with a screen type separator and one fuel filter. And it's not necessarily about adding filters. It's about ensuring that what's there is efficient, both in filtration and service life.
Are you having algae problems? Every once in a while I’ll get a machine in with algae in the fuel...fuel filters have black chunks and particles and sometimes you can see a slime on top of the fuel in the tank
Most of my problems were short service lives on machines with one fuel filter and a screen bowl. A 4tnv106t should have been able to go a minimum of 250 hours on a fuel filter, but, no. Since tossing the screen only separator for an fm100 @15micron, I can now get over 700 hours on the two filters. My early cat stuff (d4h, 943, and 963lgp) also had screen only separators. As for algae, it actually looks like snot. The black powder stuff is asphaltenes, and it's typically only found here on my isx engines, where the fuel tanks are smoking hot after a 10hr shift.
i have one machine that has black slime balls in it i was going to put some john deere fuel treat in it, what causes this algae problem and what is the best way to fix plus make sure it does not happen again. also i think i am going to order a case of clear inline filters like above plus a box of fm100s and install them. i have one machine with fm100 and it has the best service life.
Diesel tank algae is actually a bacteria infection. Main source...water. It can be water in the fuel, that is water at the bottom of the tank, prime habitat for this bacteria, and can also be condensation source at top of tank, air space from tank not filled. Always keep water purged from bottom of tank and always fill tank with fuel at end of shift.
can you install a filter on your fuel trailer to prevent anything leaving the bulk tank
I use petroclear 51110w or equivalent, 10 micron, water blocking filters on all of my 500 gallon tanks. Used to use the 51130w @ 30 micron, but, the service life is no shorter on the 10 micron. I also have a goldenrod assembly w/ screen element instead of cellulose, before the 51110w, so i know when to drain/ clean the 500 gallon tanks. And p550215, 22 micron, water blocking filters on all my L tanks in truck beds.
I have fitted fleetguard FS1242 pre filters to 3 of our machines in about 6 years . Meant to fit more as I find them good for 150ish hp machines that they are on to date . I get 750 to 1000 hours at €25 apiece . At 20 or 25 microns and a sediment bowl ,they time in well with the main fuel filter for changing .
