When installing a ve injection pump on a 4bt Cummins does it have to be timed with the camshaft & crank marks. Does the engine have to put on tdc & marks lined up before installation of the ve rotary pump. I’ve had some say that it doesn’t & others say it does. I’m installing a new long block 4bt with my fuel system.
Technically speaking, the pump should only be removed at TDC - being locked in place with the lock bolt - making refitting foolproof. In reality, if the pump uses a woodruff key to locate the timing gear, you can reinstall it with the engine in any position, line up the housing scribe marks - & it will run. Obviously, if you are installing this way, the pump will not be locked at TDC. However, a PRECISE VE pump install, should include setting the timing with a dial gauge - using a spec that should be located on the engine S/N tag (ie 1.5mm 0r 2.0mm) Special tools are required.
