working on a cat 420e backhoe. installed a new injection pump. timing is good. we can see crank speed from primary and secondary sensors. when we look at no start parameters injection disable turns on when cranking. it will start if we disconnect the crank sensor. not sure what to do next? has anyone ran in to this issue? serial number dan02282
Some more background to the reason for installing a new FIP might be handy. With the price of a replacement pump it's not something a person does on a whim. Also when you disconnect the crank sensor what Diagnostic Code does it set.? Have you tried leaving the crankshaft sensor connected and disconnect the cam speed sensor instead.?
we've had the back hoe for about a year now. it began giving us trouble 6 months after purchase, first it would start and miss until operating temperature, then a hard start at first start up run rough until it warmed up. then no start. we though it was a fuel issue originally. replaced the fuel filters some fuel lines thinking it was loosing prime. replaced the crank sensor when we removed it for inspection it broke. after a few months of trying a couple things we ordered a cat et scan tool to watch for data. when it would not start we removed the return filter and found metal debris in the filter we thought it was coming from the injection pump? the backhoe has about 5800hrs on it,
it will only run with the crank sensor disconnected
You mentioned that, but will it run with the crank sensor connected and the cam sensor disconnected.? If you try this what DTC does it throw.? Also what DTC does it throw when you disconnect the crank sensor and it runs.?
No it will not run with the cam sensor disconnected and when the crank sensor is connected. No crank signal code when crank sensor is disconnected
No DTC's when trying to crank with both sensors connected.? Was the front timing cover/geartrain of the engine disturbed when the FIP was replaced.? Can you download an ET Product Status Report in pdf format and post it up please.?
No
I will hook up the computer give you product status report
Attached is the procedure to remove the FIP. It requires both the camshaft and the crankshaft to be pinned in addition to putting the engine on TDC #1 compression stroke. Is this how you did it.?
Yes we locked the timing in place #1 was tdc made sure when reinstalling the pump it was locked when torqued down. Removed the lock pins all timing marks were in place.
It is an unfortunate fact that the timing marks will line up on #1 cylinder TDC both on the compression stroke and on the exhaust stroke. Are you sure that you pinned it on the correct one.?
