is this another creation from Ron at Prairie road builder?

seen this this morning alond the stoney trail in calgary looks like a 980 or 988 loader, cab on backwards, with a disker and ripper mounted where the bucket would go looks kind interesting, although a tractor and disker would likely be cheaper

Ya, a tractor would be cheaper, but what if you had an old loader, that was beat, but ran OK, a spare disc, a slow fab guy?? You would have to flip the diffs around, Right?? More Pics!!!!

Yep, that's the latest 838 to come from Ron at Brent Engineering. While a tractor and disc would be a cheaper unit to set up, this machine will be able to dig deeper per pass, for lack of a better description. The whole idea as I understand it, is to quickly chew up and break up the soil to speed up drying in wet conditions. This goes along with what Ron's 25M was designed for, as well as part of the reason the S18G was built. Basically, with the short, and somewhat wet seasons we have up his way, Ron is trying to find faster ways to dry soil so it can be used and in turn move and place more dirt per season.

Is Ron a contractor, or a machine builder?

That's a wild looking outfit. I'll bet it'll get er done. Now if only the road he built by my place was as good....

The 988 Cat loader was the base for Cats military scraper the 830M. THey are still out there despite being made for the Vietnam war. THey had a dozer blade on front and a 20 yard bowl.

Actually, he's a damn good guy, but he is very demanding. He didn't get where he is today by being a pushover. Do what he wants, when he wants, and he's great to deal with.

No most front and rear diffs are the same in cat loaders, they run either way under load. Later Bob

I know zero about this machine, but depending on how the transmission is set up you may want it to run the "correct" direction under load. For example, if it has helical gears there will be axial thrust, which for several reasons it may not be designed to accomodate as much while running in reverse. (thrust surfaces, bearing loading, case strength, shaft deflection, etc.) And you may be sending power through an extra gearset to get it to run "backwards" all the time, which may not be as heavily designed and will increase the heating slightly. OR it could work equally well in both directions. Hard to tell without talking to the guys who actually designed it. ISZ

I could be a 740 artic instead of a wheel loader. No need then to turn anything around.
