Jcb 217s removing transmission advice needed

Jcb217s ยท 2018-02-28 20:11

Well spring is on the way, my 217's jcb backhoe suffered what we think is a broken input shaft unfortunately over a year ago now. Finally have some money saved up and can finally get around to fixing it. So the big question is what is the best way to safety remove the transmission where it sits. It's on nice flat ground which is a plus. A friend of mine suggested a chain hoist by running a chain up over the cab. But want some insight on the best way. Don't mind buying a big tranny jack or other items needed. Have a welder and such to make a cradle if need be. Thanks in advance Ryan

The safest, easiest way to remove it is a transmission jack. Harbor freight in Auburn should have one rated for 2000 lbs. I have one and it is a high quality jack. Also did you do as hookedondiesel suggested in the last post in your original thread about your JCB ? This is what he said. ----> "There should be a "Relay" like Jeff said, around the fuse's in the fuse box, this relay should "click" when the dump button is pushed...just turn on the ignition "without" starting the engine to hear better."

I did and I could hear the relay click when I pushed the dump valve on the stick. Ended up checking it forward and reverse in which it would try to spin the driveshaft in both directions. But seems to have broke the input so once there is resistance it will just slip by itself. I'll go check harbor frieght this weekend. I just want something rugged enough to be safe. They are definitely a big transmission

If you do go to Harbor Freight be sure to get on line and print the 20% discount coupon. Or I think they can read it off of a smartphone when you display it on it. Here is a link to the one I have. It does weigh 145 lbs ! ---> https://www.harborfreight.com/2000-lb-low-profile-transmission-jack-60391.html They do have cheaper ones but they are only rated foe 800 lbs.

Hi The only safe way to remove the gearbox is with a trans jack with the cradle and strap it on as its a heavy lump to fall on you. Loader arms up and safety prop in ,rear end up on the legs and support as these will creep down making it a bitch to put back in. Unbolt props and handbrake and electrics ,remove dipstick tube from gearbox. Support engine with a jack and timber under sump and get a good position for your trans jack. It often pays to remove the rear wheels justs helps see what your doing . Remove bung from bottom of bell housing and undo the 6 9/16 bolts that hold the flexi plate to the flywheel mark orientation of flexi to flywheel and push the torque back into the bell housing it wont go to far in. remove bolts bell housing at the top of the block you might have an extra bolt in the mid position a bit lower than the flange. Remeber to put the earth strap back on if its bolted to these. pull out box and just watch your torque dont fall out . When you put it back do in reverse but use a long bolt and a short bolt screwed in with the head cut off so as you can lift it up and onto long bolt and then adjust and get onto short bolt and your home. need any other help just shout. Good Luck
