JD350 water pump help

ak_snowbear · 2011-02-17 17:31

My wp shaft is loose, lots of side to side play. No leaks and not overheating, yet... It has a reversable fan. The parts folks up here want anywhere from 670-740 bucks for a replacement I've pulled the pump and I am thinking about trying to just replace the shaft/bearing and seal. Any experience here with DIY rebuilds? Another option is a reman. Can anyone recommend a parts house? Not much luck finding one on the net so far. Thanx!

ak_snowbear, Ask your dealer for copy out of engine manual that show rebuilding water pump. They are not that hard to rebuild, you need a puller, a press, new impeller seals and bearings and some grease.

Got the pump apart w/o much trouble. A little heat on the pulley, a 3-legged puller and impact got it off. Pressed out the bearing, shaft and impeller w/about 11T on the press. Impeller came off the shaft nice and easy. Replacement parts, $36.85, be here late next week. The story on the machine. It has less than 1000 hrs. Most its life was plowing snow for the State DOT. After it sold to private party it sat for a long period of time. So long the top 1/4 of the impeller is heavily corroded with scale.

Does anyone have the re-assembly specs for these pumps? Like how much space should there be between the impeller and back plate? Any other info I should know?

I know that price sounds steep Snowbear but don’t feel too bad. A friend of mine just had the water pump replaced on his little Takeuchi TB138 excavator (29hp 3 cyl Yanmar engine). Water pump cost $1500 and total was about $2000. That’s from the only Tak dealer in town. Machine only has about 1500hrs and a couple of years old so he’s not too impressed. Hope you get you JD fixed soon. Chris Brisbane Australia.

Hi there, i rebuilt my 350`s pump about 5 years ago and it was not too hard, i do have the shop manual too. Do you have the whole front cover out of your way?

Well the parts arrived, sort of. They are still at the parts house, the bearing came w/o a shaft. Parts man says it was suppose to come with the shaft so he will try and have it over nighted. Probably won't be here till monday. Sledcrazzy, yeah the nose and radiator are off and out of the way. Curious do you remember if the bearing and shaft came pre-assembled? I doubt its a big deal to press them together...
