We had a 700h with a clogged fuel cap breather that did the same thing. Try loosening fuel cap when symptoms start.

550g's have a threaded, non vented cap originally, so look for a tank vent, if running with a loose cap fixed your issue.

Not sure if the G model is the same as the J. My 450j has two fuel filters, did you replace both? One by the engine and the other is in the back right hand door.

When it dies, restart it and hop off and wait for it to die again. Once it stops try the primer pump and see what the lever pressure feels like. When you move that lever you're pulling the diaphragm back against spring pressure, release it and the spring pumps the fuel out, until the fuel pressure builds and holds the diaphragm back so there is no pressure on the lever because the spring is held back also (or there is pressure on half the stroke because the spring only pushed some of the fuel out). There is more pressure on the lever when the inlet is plugged and the lever/diaphragm is pulling against a vacuum. You can tell if the pump is pumping air and not full of fuel because it will have normal pressure pushing the lever, but it will spring back with the same pressure, no fuel to dampen the spring pressure. If the primer pump builds pressure in a couple of strokes then you can look downstream for a clog, or put a gauge near the injection pump and see what you get running and stalling. If it's pulling a vacuum then look on the suction side, blow back into the tank, take the fittings apart individually, or pull the strainer out of the tank and clean it.

Check the tank. I have had a piece of plastic in the tank and another time had a rag in the tank, it would run fine for a while then die. I figured out after it died the the rag would float away from the outlet and it would fire back up and run fine for a while. Some days it never died and others it did it manny time. also had one that did the simlar thing only on that one it had pinion nuts in the tank that would block the outlet pipe. Let us know what you find.Good luck.

Wow the machine ran 11 years with a loose fuel cap, has it been used all this time. That would sound pretty good. Go back to post number 5 by Delmer and read all that he posted. Have the filters been changed lately. He mentioned some good things to check. Simon C

Yes machine ran good with all the vent plugs out (had 2 vent plugs on the fuel cap. The cap was not loose no vent plugs on the cap. Had wire mesh in the air hole so no bees could get in. Machine started to die out again Machine gets used very part time but for a hour or two when it’s started. New fuel filter but I did not blow the line to the back of the tank. No lights on dash when it dies out. Has a new jd fuel lift pump on machine.

And a jd alternator- doesn’t act like it’s over heating.

You will need to test the fuel pressure available to the Injection pump. If the unit will work off of a 5 gallon can of Diesel, then you have a fuel supply issue. Will have to start somewhere testing before throwing money at it. Simon C

If your are still having problems check the fine mesh fuel strainer at bottom of fuel tank. Note there is a SR Nunber break on strainer part numbers.

  15. #15Steve Austin2025-02-08 12:38

The strainer is part number 27 in the parts breakdown. SR number up to 763492 is AT125261. SR number 763493 and above is T42633.

Wow. @vmaggio Can I ask an honest question? What made you come back after 11 years and update this machine? Just curious.

I forgot about these post, started having trouble with it running good for about 45 minutes than dies out. Went and asked a question to google and this popped up. It’s the same machine. I ask Google or watch YouTube videos on how to fix it.
