John Deere 655B can’t raise bucket

Cerino2000 · 2026-08-12 17:08

My 85 year old friend has this 655b. It was fine when he parked it probably 10 years ago. When he last got on it a few days ago, it had a huge hydraulic leak due to a blown hose in the rear of machine. Fixed that. It blew out a LOT of hydraulic fluid. Had to put about 30 gals back in it. All track movements work great. Anything to do with bucket…not so great. Can’t get any up and down movement. Can get a little tilt movement. We need to get that bucket up so we can get this thing on a lowboy. We thought maybe had air in system but we’ve worked the controls every which way for some time now (hour?) Still can’t get the bucket to cooperate.Where do I start?

Is it making any noises like it's starving for hyd. fluid?

    Actually…no.

Is the tank on the left side full? The one on the left is the hydraulic reservoir and the one on the right is for the transmission.

Make sure the auxiliary control handle isn't stuck ( it's right beside the loader control lever and should be right in the middle of the slot. There's an unloader spool in the control valve that could be stuck as well. The unloader spool is the one on the right ( plug # 14 can be removed to check it).

For the hydraulic tank, the fluid level is at the bottom of the sight glass. We’ll take a look at that loader valve suggestion. Thx all.

when it is at the bottom of glass it can sometimes is deceiving look in tank or just add 5 gal and try it

Thx. So far this is a no go. We got it up on the low boy and moved it where it needs to go. I’m thinking maybe something is hung up in one of the valves somewhere. Going to try tapping on some stuff next time we gotta deal with it.
