Machine was working fine and suddenly just stopped. No power on any accessories in the cab, wont crank, etc. Fuse F61 (45A) is blown and blows the second it is replaced. Wondering where to begin, suspect a short to ground. Has anyone dealt with any issues like this on these machines? Is it possible that the battery relay could be bad. Posting this question as I skim the 1,000 page manual lol. Thanks in advance
45 amp? fusible link type thing? If you can, connect a headlight where the fuse connects, A direct short will only make the headlight full bright, much cheaper and safer than blowing a handful of those fuses. Wild ass guess, disconnect the main power lead at the alternator, making sure it can't short to ground and see if that is the problem. You can use a test light from the battery hot to the output stud on the alternator with the wire removed, if she lights up bright that is probably the problem, Long shot, but a shorted diode can cause this. Battery relay typically only takes a couple amps to pull in. YMMV
Good day Suggest pull the relay and check if you lost the short. Kind regards Uffex
Does it blow with the key off? If it blows with the key off, then everything downstream of F61 is fused with smaller fuses except the key switch, wiring, load dump relay (K1) and the starter protection relay (K18).
Yes it blows with the key off. I didnt find any other blown fuses and finally located a wiring schematic last night as well. I guess I get to trace everything down now. Issue is is that I am in florida, and the thing is 1/2 way in a ditch that's slowly filling with water due to the incoming storm. Always something lol.
Thank you
Great idea.
Went back and tried to trace a fault. How do these battery relays work? Should both terminals on the battery relay have constant power?
Hi Steve could you post a photo so that we can identify the make, it could be as simple as a diode. KR Uffex
Relay battery 8943795431 2547131-A 24V 50710 Jideco It looks like the image attached. Battery connected through the bottom left terminal. Key off with nothing connected on the bottom right side of the batt relay causes the negative terminal on the battery to arc upon connection (with F61 fuse put back in). Without the main fuse in, nothing arcs obviously. I just dont truly understand how the batt relay works. Should it always have continuous power? Does this elude to a short further downstream or that the batt relay is bad? Tried to test it earlier, getting poured on with the rain here currently (machine is out in the open in a ditch currently.)
Hi Steve Yes we know this one just give me a short time I will dig out the information Kind regards Uffex
Attached is the information you requested, if you would post me your manual we can talk you through any issues, PM me for my email address. Kind regards Uffex
Of course. Thank you for your assistance!!
So based on what you just sent this relay has to be bad if the key is off as the short is still there?
Hi Steve Take off the cover you will see a diode connecting both the plus and minus to the coil - if this has gone bad (The diode) the short will go when you unhook just one side. The relay in most case's will be good it is only the diode. Your circumstances are a little desperate from what you say. If the diode is bad unhooking it will let the relay switch on you can start the machine and move it but when you switch the relay off that is when it can damage your onboard computers, so be careful not to turn it on and off more than you are forced. In your shoes I would just buy a new diode. If I can help some more come back we try to please. Kind regards Uffex
Didn't look at the diagrams but short story on the battery relays, the two main lugs are not connected with key off, only hot circuit typically goes direct to key switch, key switch on sends current to one of the small lugs on the relay, other is grounded, unless you have an old machine with the relay in the ground cable. Relay pulls in and connects battery to everything, starter, alternator, etc. Sometimes there's a shutoff timer that keeps the relay pulled in long enough for the engine to stop turning so the alternator is no longer putting out current. Just a master switch turned into a relay.
