Create an account with Cat SIS 2.0. Input your serial number and you can find all the information you are looking for. I see you are in NC. Check with Iron Peddlers in Monroe for new and used parts, or Save A Tractor in Graham NC for used parts.
You don't necessarily need to know the year. The Serial Number will get you all the parts and service information you need. For a machine of that age SIS is not as accurate as maybe you would like. For examplae oit contains no detailed information of what options were installed a particular Serial Number. your best bet would be to get hold of a Parts Manual then you could search for anything by Part Number. You need XMBP9568 that covers all machines from 71J4558-Up. If you can't find a used copy anywhere it can still be downloaded from Cat for around $120
It's a late 1974 if you want to know the year.
Get the parts books and you can look up the part number for anything. There are very few part numbers you need to ask this forum for as everything is found in the parts manual for your machine. I tried saving money buying parts online but at the end of the day the parts I was buying weren't that much cheaper compared to going to the CAT shop. It's really just the big expensive parts that you should spend your time searching for online. Look up the CAT filter numbers in your manual and then google that + cross reference and you can find the WIX or similar number for that filter.
changed motor oil and filter and new oil breather only got out 4 qts after draining and filter. book says 5.7qts oil change we were on level ground and engine had been run normal temp at drain time. why does 4qts show full on dipstick after change and running?

But oil change only took 4 gals new motor oil showing full on stick measured what came out about 4 gals with old filter 71j5548 eng3304pc 955L got parts Manuel and service manual. cant figure why only 4 gals when capacity says 5.7???
serviced hydraulic cap new guts and new strainer serviced diesel fuel cap new guts and strainer screen opened breather holes in both caps they were completely blocked new large and small radiator caps changing thermostat next flush radiator new 50/50 extd life cat antifreeze 2 new alternator belts and diesel fuel spin on filter ( cant find any diesel fuel screens dealer sold us new one but cant find on my engine motor plate says 3304 pc serial #78p46114 arrangement #7N1525 any thoughts? 955L 71J5548
I'm sure you mean gallons rather than quarts....... The section in the manual is titled "Refill Capacities ( Approximate )", and that's all they are - approximate. You should always fill to the dipstick, sight glass or level plug rather than simply dumping in the quantity of oil stated in the manual. If you are showing full on the stick with the machine on level ground you should be good to go. The only potential fly in the oitment is whether the dipstick is original or not. Do you see a Part Number stamped on it anywhere..? If there is one it ought to be somewhere near the top. Apparently 5S-2898 is the correct Part Number.
What Part Number did they sell you.?
bought new dipsticks cat dealer for motor oil and transmission and bev gear checked new dipsticks against old corroded/rusted/broken cap dipsticks at replacement time all matched
Again he asks - Part Number.?
5s-7645 ordered one box came with 4 parts manual said quantity one
oil 5s-2898 trans 7k-673 bev gear 7k-672
dipstick numbers came out of org used cat parts manual(i bought) front cover covered my serial number for 955L 71j5548 series
all 3 new dipsticks markings matched my oil existing ones exactly
old existing not oil existing
used all CAT DEALER PARTS AND CAT FLUIDS dad bought farm 47 acres 20 acres cleared in pasture we want to clear other 27 acres so bought 955L rebuilt motor 5 yrs before we bought it 2575 hrs on old hour meter( new meter now working started at O0000.0) i did all new gauges
yes gallons sorry
So it is confirmed that the engine oil dipstick is correct. Manual is correct. If you have one installed then it will be mounted under the accessory drive. Although the primary screen is shown as only being installed on Japan-market tractors for some reason. Another thing is that the 5S-7645 is listed for 3304 engines with 43V Serial Numbers, not 78P. I wonder if your tractor has been re-engined at some point.? Everything that is listed for 71J-prefix machines has a 43V-prefix engine Serial Number.
thank you for helping
That engine came from a 950 Wheel Loader with a 31K-prefix Serial Number. That is the only machine model where the 7N-1525 Engine Arrgt Number is used. There's your answer.
dads 94 yrs old want it as dependable as i can make it so 2,000 hour completed soon alot more new stuff. dealer and parts book showed u needed 2 new breathers CAT box came with 2 in it found one m, it was on top of pyramid shaped cover on bev gear box under seat ( adjust pedal/brake cap acess) COULD NOT FIND SECOND ONE location ???? 9g-5127 9n-1597
thank u answers my question for sure
I would say you're going to need a separate Parts Manual for the engine because i'm betting there will be significant differences between what the 71J Parts manual says and what you actually have in the machine. That fuel screen being one of them.
thank you will look for one
any ideas found book UEG0797S 78P1-78P18798 do u think this covers my engine from 950 wheel loader? 78p46114 7n1525
think i found book covers: 950 wheel loader: 81j7846 up 31k1486 up 78p18799 up engine ( my engine is 78p46114) book #SEBP1048
SEBP1048 is the one you want. 950 loaders built up until 31K1485 were equipped with a D330C engine not a 3304. Be careful you don't pay too much for it. A lot of sellers in the internet marketplace sites are extremely proud of their second-hand offerings.
got it $18.00 thanku for ur help
replaced old fuel gauge exact fuel gauge on 955L is it a fuel level gauge or a fuel pressure gauge? not sure
Seems to be a fuel pressure gauge if it is all original. See attached.
thank you
I thought you had a Parts Manual for your tractor.?
Fuel pressure is on the dash. Fuel level is checked with the dip stick under the fuel filler cap. Running these machines out of fuel can turn into a real nightmare. Check your fuel level regularly.
956L book at dads farm 1 1/2 hrs away left it there i have 950 open wheel book here thank u for info
having new alternator belts thermostat and flush and fill antifreeze and diesel spin on filter and screen replaced tomorrow by retired cat mech got tracks tightened tilt cylinders rebuilt no leaks but 2 lift culinders leaking going to have him rebuild those too should be good as new cleared for 7 hrs so far running great thank u for help
dads driving it he is 94 loving it!
evidently our under carriage has been swapped out too,, does not match diagrams in 955L cat parts manual for my correct serial number u were right my motor came out of 950 wheel loader that book matches motor completely thank u good to have correct books.
955L
That's not entirely surprising. It would have been amazing if it still had the original undercarriage installed after all these years. The correct Parts Manual for the tractor (obviously does not cover the engine because it's a transplant) is XMBP9568 for machines 71J4558-Up. I posted an image of it on Page 1.
