komatsu 228 fuel problem

sledgehammer ยท 2011-10-14 22:58

i have a komatsu pc228uslc. today it suddenly developed a fuel delivery issue. it is starving for fuel. step 1: i changed the fuel filter. no change. step 2: i primed the engine until there was lots of pressure. the engine then fired up and ran properly for about 30 seconds then went back to suffering. step 3: i loosened off the pressure line from the lift pump and fired up the engine. it wasn't pumping fuel. i shut the engine off and pumped the primer. eventually i got some fuel to squirt. so i'm wondering if the lift pump is shot or if i have a flow blockage somewhere. is there an inline strainer somewhere or a strainer in the lift pump itself? i cant see the lift pump at all on this machine so i cant just start pulling stuff apart...

Hi mate. can you post which dash model your machine is (eg. pc228-7 etc..) and the serial number and i'll see if I can help.

remove the inlet line banjo bolt check to see if there is a strainer there they unscrew out of the bajo bolt for cleaning

There is a fuel strainer under the cab. The plastic fuel tank is mounted at the back bottom of the cab. There should be a panel or door that can be opened for access to the strainer. Good Luck!

I agree with John C, look for an inline filter. Komatsu has a habit of putting small inline filters in some awkward places on their small machines.

well i took the supply line off the lift pump, and nothing was coming out of it. pressured up the fuel tank, and still nothing. i blew back through the fuel line, the fuel started to come out. pressured up the fuel tank again and fuel started coming out like crazy. so there must be some junk in the tank.

Yeh I had an issue like that, took off the tank, pressure washed it, dried it out with a rag on a stick, works great, but Im gonna get the inside of the tank coated in the off season, the units old and for $350 itll eliminate any rust from causing the problem again.

G'day all, A method I use to clean out tanks on excavators or tanks without baffles is to vacuum them out with a siphon hose, I use a 4 foot length of 3/4 pipe and the fuel tanker with pump and delivery hose, put the pipe on the end of the refueling hose, prime the siphon by pumping with the pipe end below the surface of fuel level in tank then remove the hose from the pump,( beats the hell out of a mouthfull of diesel ) have a helper hold the end of the hose into have a couple of buckets at the ready and move the end of the pipe about the bottom of the tank, helps to have a 12 volt globe on the end of a piece of 2 core flex for a bit of light in the tank. much easier and quicker than draining and removing the tank to clean it out.

i was just go to reverse the polarities on my slip tank and suck the tank out with the hose.
