i'm looking at buying one--- anyone know anything about these particular models? it's a zero tail swing and was wondering if there's any cons with this setup other than it's hard to work on

I have ran one for about 2 yrs and loved it! It was powerfull and quick. And not to mention you not always breakin your neck and watchin your A** End. If its in new condition i would say buy it

it's actually pretty nice shape--- 5900 hours, under carriage is very good shape, doesnt use any oil, no leaks. like you said quick and powerful. maybe a tad tippy when you have the bucket fully extended though

They have a toned down electronic system in them with few diagnostic functions. But then again there were fewer electronic components to go bad. If you purchase one you should have something big enough to pick the counterweight. You literally can't get to the fuel strainer and changing the fan belts is tough even for a circus performer. The hydraulic systems of the machines I worked on in my area were later model Dash 6. I had a lot of problems with compensator and stick regeneration valves in the standard PC200 and PC220 but didn't see any problems in the 228 models. The fuel tanks were another issue. It is plastic and mounted under the cab. I had heard of a leaking one and the wrench that did the job told me he almost had to gut the right side of the machine to get it out. Mostly though this were pretty decent machines. They were smooth to operate, easy on fuel and as fast as any other machine in their class. Good Luck!

Show us some pics of the Komatsu, if you get it. That hydraulic system will make a hero out of a zero, its the best. Might have to wait a couple more days for parts and they might cost more, pick your poison. Can't go wrong with a Komatsu or Cat excavator, either way.

the experiance i have heard is quick and powerfull

REnted one for 2 weeks, first time running an excavator. Very powerful and quick. Quicker than my EC240b anyway. Ran a 42" 1.75 yard bucket no problem. Blew a couple hydraulic lines, but not really the fault of the machine. Smallish cab compared to a regular machine. You definitely won't miss the tail on a regular machine. Good luck

Same digging capacity as a PC200. The dealer I work for has a bunch in the rental fleet. Everyone seems to like them.

Are you getting it? I'll be a little jealous.

Me too! I looked at one down here and it's funny how you talk yourself in to something when you really like 'em. It's all "oh yeah, but I can fix that.... and that's not a big deal, most machines will be like that at this hour range..." and the wife says OK then! I went "Huh - what??!" you are spose to stop me... I did find something to stop me though, see if you can pick it in the following pics - apart from the price tag.... List Price*: $140,000* Currency AUD Type Excavators Sub-type Track Mounted Pricing Notes + GST= $154000 Hours 5064 Make: KOMATSU Model: PC228USL-3 HIGH WIDE Year built: 2005

I give up - thing looks like gold to me.... Funny business on the rails, maybe??

Have a look where the rams meet the boom. Can you see it (from the small pics)? Also, you can't tell from the pics, but it needs $$$ spent on the undercarriage. The drive sprockets are nearly pointy enough to p_rick your finger on I've heard of a couple of stories down this way now, saying some small operators will track logs all the way out to the truck loading point rather than using a skidder/dozer. Even if that wasn't the case, forestry stuff cops a flogg'n, they don't tend to worry about tracking sideways across step hills while carrying a log, etc.

still up in the air but leaning towards it. i'm still waiting for him to give me a final price because it needs 32" pads. it only has 28" and it's a little heavy. as it stands this is roughly where we're at: 2000 pc228uslc 5900 hours VG undercarriage excavating bucket with thumb overall condition is good $45,000 what you guys think?

  14. #14watglen2009-11-29 23:12

Offer 35 or something like that. Make sure he understands he could be sitting on it a while!

  15. #15sledgehammer2009-11-29 23:25

originally he wanted around 50.. he's coming down because he doesnt want to sit on it all winter. and is also offering payment terms i searched and found most around the same year\hours are advertised in the 50-55 range with no thumb

  16. #16watglen2009-11-29 23:39

This spring i bought a 2007 volvo 240b loaded with thumb and aux hyd. coupler. Every available feature. 2048 hrs, super clean for 58k US. That may have been the deal of a lifetime, but watch iron planet, there is a ton of good iron up for auction. There are nearly 300 machines coming up right now. This is definitely a buyers market, don't miss out on the opportunity... Good luck.

I guess there is a ironplanet.com you are talking about? I got auto resolved to http://www.ironplanet.com.au Edit: never mind, there is a tick box to search the different countries

So what do you think about the funny plating thing - a crack / tear repair job?
