Looking for a ball park cost at todays parts costs to change rails and pads along with sprocket segments. Any body have an idea how much part of the job would cost or entire job with front Idlers and all rollers would cost . Trying to evaluate a machine for purchase and undercarriage is done. Any ones experience is appreciated. US. Dollars or Canadian Dollars Simon C
I'm going to throw out a WAG here based on what I spent on parts that are half the size of yours, I'm thinking you might be looking at $20k for padded rails and segments. Hope I'm close.......
Thanks for that, Shimmy . Will wait to see if anyone else has replaced recently. Someone else may have done the job also. I am all ears to anyones response. Simon C
Parts and labor? OEM or aftermarket?
Parts and Labour Please if You Know. Aftermarket most likely. Simon C
I would not imagine Komatsu would even know what a machine that old would use. I would think we could guesstimate pretty close what labor cost would/could be. Swapping segments and wrapping new rails shouldn't even take 2 days, but if it did would be around $3000. If you were looking to completely rebuild (rollers, idlers, tensioners), I'd say you had better figure on a couple weeks, or $15k. Now we just need to know what a set of ITR rails with pads, bottom rollers, idlers, and (if you can get them) seal kits for the tensioners might cost.

To sit back hoping that someday, some way, someone will make things right, is to go on feeding the crocodile, hoping he will eat you last - but eat you he will. So you figure at least $15000 Labour for all rollers and rails and idlers. Parts must be $20000 or more. Hope someone else has bought such a package in the not so distant past. Will wait for more reply's..The machine I am looking at has Zero undercarriage. Another one has no transmission but new undercarriage. Maybe make one out of two. That's what I am trying to find cost for. Simon C
At today's prices I'd figure $25k plus on parts alone on aftermarket. A dozer that size.....if I were doing this as a quote job.....$8k minimum labor.
Well, yes. Labor is at roughly $150/hour currently. Completely rebuilding an undercarriage that size is not a small job. Everything is big, heavy, and probably rusted solid. Obviously this is probably worst case scenario, but best case might still be 60 hours. Day to break down, couple days for bottom rollers, couple days for idlers and tensioners, and a day to put rails back on. Ve, looks like I'm pretty frickin close on my guesstimate lol.
The cheapest aftermarket SALT track chains are US$5000 each. New pads would run to at least US$80 each = US$6500 in round figures. Track shoe bolts and nuts around US$5 each - another US$1500. That all adds up, big time. Cheapest aftermarket SF track rollers are US$600 each, DF are US$700 each, carrier rollers around US$500 each. So, with 7 roller track frame, US$4200 + US$4900 + US$1000 = US$9200 just for a full set of rollers. At this point, you're up to around US$27K - and you still haven't fitted them. Add in the labour, the extras such as replacing a pile of rusty fasteners, extracting broken bolts, straightening and repairing guards, finding cracks you never knew were there, and gouging and welding them up - and the $$$$'s are mounting!! Then you find a broken track recoil spring! - or even both! More $$$'s!! Best to do the track adjuster seals while you're at it! You're starting to refuse to even look at the invoices about now, it's too depressing! Doing a full undercarriage rebuild properly is one of the most expensive things you can ever get into. That's the simple reason why so many old tractors go to the scrappers, once the undercarriage repairs start to look astronomical. I used to do a full undercarriage rebuild on my Cat D7F's about every 3 years. With 3 tractors, I did plenty of them. It paid me to do them, as the tractors worked all day, every day, and they were my primary income. But it still took a year to 18 mths of full time work, to pay off those major undercarriage overhauls. If you haven't got a lot of work lined up for your D155, you're going to be poor for a few years to come , if you go deep into a full undercarriage rebuild, on a tractor that size. 175-32-00119 Track 41 Link As SALT Chain KOMATSU D155A-1 UNDERCARRIAGE NewThis Listing is for ** ONE ** Track Link As Chain 41 LINK SEALED & LUBRICATED for KOMATSU D155A-1 . yeah , not long bought a Dash 2 , I was told its newish tracks were worth about $NZ 50,000 all up . An early D155 would have to be very cheap if the tracks were worn out to purchase .
Sounds like my $20k WAG was about right on the money........maybe a bit light depending on how much for segments. Simon, I think you might need to keep looking. Unless they will let you take the tractors off their hands for a steak supper.
I don't have any experience with dozers bigger than a 7H, but I do think I have a pretty good perspective. If you're not doing production work like Nicky does, a dozer is a necessary piece of iron that gets paid for by the actual moneymakers, be it a scraper or excavator or crusher. They rarely pay their own way, they are a small piece in a big puzzle. My $.02.
I just realised I made a typo with the carrier roller cost - 4 carrier rollers x US$500 is US$2000, not US$1000 - plus I clean forgot to add on sprocket segments - probably at least another US$2,000. And if someone has let the sprocket segment bolts get loose at some stage - that's more work, building up and re-drilling the bolt holes. Plus you need new sprocket segment bolts, it doesn't pay to use the old ones, they get stretched, and can break in use, or break even when you're tightening them up.
No matter what anyone says the only correct way to do the rollers and rock guards is to remove the track frames, in the end it is way less work than trying to do the job with them on. Especially if you run into difficult bolts. The complete under carriage overhaul will cost more than the dozer is worth, unless it is very low time. Used D8 tracks will work too, if I remember we used some used 155 tracks on a D8H. In the day the outfit I worked for never bought new tracks for nothin, aways used. I got some good deals back then on used tracks, I remember one decent set for $500. yeah those were the days.
Chidog is right on the mark, taking the track frames off and inverting them, is the only way to go. And yes, 9.00" pitch D8 tracks will work - as long as you can acquire them cheap, too! LOL Here's the conversion summary for converting the D155-1 to 9.00" D8 undercarriage. The downside is, you have to use Cat track pads, Komatsu use a different bolt pattern.

Good luck... nyheavytractor.com Thanks so much for all the info OzDozer and the rest of you fine folks. $40000.00 US. would be around $58000 Canadian with the extra shipping we pay for everything and exchange. That being said as I previously posted I am looking at 1 Dozer that starts and hydraulics go up and down but machine will not move. I have already figured out what is wrong with transmission not engaging and plan to fix it. The second machine everything works but nothing at all left of undercarriage. Can get this one for $10000 or less Canadian and the one which don't move for $10000 or less Canadian. The one that doesnt move is work ready other than dont move. The owner is very old and not interested to even figure out why it won't go into gear. Hoping to be able to put an offer on it soon. A full machine of spare parts is worth something for the one with no more tracks as just the winch which is not needed will fetch a few dollars. Thanks for all your replys. Simon C
Can we ask what kind of work you plan to do with these tractors?
Make one machine good. Hope to get work ploughing electric cable from windmills into the ground. Machine will probably be pulling the plough . Usually around 1000Hp. of power pulling the plow to put cables into the ground. Otherwise north of here in Yukon there is a lot of demand for old cats for 3.5 months of year removing overburden for Placer Dirt Gold mining. Go on You-Tube and look up Dulac Mining in Yukon and when you see the video's you will understand better what kind of work is done. That is my plan. Just need to acquire 1 Machine for parts and one for use. simon C
I wonder if you maybe should be considering one of these instead? Might be a bit more profit at some point? https://www.equipmentfacts.com/listings/construction-equipment/auctions/online/222893911/cat-d8l
That kind of Auction is always a possibility. Don't know what kind of prices they are paying. All I know is that a new D8 size machine is more than a million Canadian, and big dollars to rent. Lots of prospectors will chance 40-80 thousand and not have to make payments for the 9 months of no work. I sold 1 machine to a guy in Montana last year and who knows if I will sell or rent this year. Simon C
You might try here. Alibaba is pretty useless for individual purchases, the sellers on there are looking for dealers and wholesalers, and they only want to sell you a minimum of a 20' seatainer full of their product.
Thanks OzDozer for those points on Alibaba. Simon C
Not so in my experience, many of the sellers are wholesalers, not manufacturers and do sell to individuals. Trading company is a seller of goods, if you run the finances through Alibaba you're covered supposedly although I never have had to make a claim. I've imported a lot of stuff from China and have had good luck. Other than the wait for sea freight and customs and all the little fees they add on at the dock to get it more of your money it's better than buying China goods from an importer here. It's a little nervously wiring thousands of $ to someone in China, the first time I really was sweating but surprise surprise it all worked out as promised. Biggest problems I've found are once it's on the dock here and you're dealing with brokers and shippers here, the China end gets it on the boat and on the way chop chop. Takes about 10 days to cross usually, Customs delays are unpredictable and can be costly as the extra charges are divided up between whoever has goods in the individual container if they decide to inspect it. And the warehouse fees are legal extortion that you pay and pay. Joe H

Thanks for the information joe--h. Was wondering if you ever used that company that you posted up above for undercarriage ' OEM Competitive Price Undercarriage Parts.......'' out of China. Would give me some very usefull information for calculating cost to repair. Simon C
joe--h; Another question? Did you have trouble to get shipped to North American west coast. I would probably get shipped to Port of Vancouver Canada or Port of Prince Rupert Canada. Any pointers to watch out for would be appreciated. Simon C
If D8 tracks can be adapted it seems there would be a better chance of finding decent used rails at least.
Not one I have used , just something that turned up in a search. West coast is direct, my nearest port is Long Beach/Los Angeles/San Pedro. They are in the same spot and the shippers call it one of the three depending on IDK what. You'll have no problem getting it up there. Small stuff can go air freight, DHL, FedEx or UPS. Freight costs are absolutely predictable UNTIL it hits the dock, they you're dealing with LTL trucking and no one will give you a price until the stuff is actually on the dock. Last few years it's just insane trying to get an answer about when & how much. Sea freight has gone way down from what it was a year ago. Truck freight seems to go only up. All I can see is anyone here selling that stuff from China is marking it up, some of them way up so you might as well buy it direct if you can. They all have English (sort of) speaking sales people, fill in the query form on their site and you'll have an answer in a day usually. Joe H
Thanks for your thoughts Welder Dave. Am on the hunt as some decent used stuff is out there for 10 cents on the dollar. Simon C
Simon have you checked with Union Tractor? When I did undercarriage on my 220 excavator they were cheaper than SMS.
Yes waiting for a reply from them. May get it today. Waiting for a reply from China also. Thanks Simon C
Trek would probably be cheaper than Union Tractor. They are in Edmonton.
If you are not in a rush you may be able to get another D155 in good order with the tracks in the condition you want for the value of the track components . dash 1's and 2's are getting old , having a donor machine is a useful thing .
I have not heard a lot of positive comments about Trek.
It depends who you talk to. It's probably comparable to the Union Tractor select branded undercarriage.
So I went and checked out this Non Starting D155-1 , Ser#15951. It is I believe about 1978, 1979. Has a S6D155-4 Engine that has not started from anywhere from 4.5 Years to 9 Years. The owner has no written record. The machine has Berco Salt tracks that are sitting and haven't moved for long enough that moss is growing on the top sides of the pads. How likely are the rollers to be seized after for sure 9 Years sitting. The undercarriage would be worth a good deal as not worn out if the links are not seized after all these years. Any thoughts from some of the senior gurus of that era. The machine was parked because it would not go into gear. So expect to have to clean transmission pump suction screen, make sure hoses on suction side are all okay and probably need new charge pump as he said a guy tried to get it going for a day so pump probably scored badly not including regular wear. The engine has not started so wonder if a guy could prelube 15 Litres of oil through oil gallery under 45 PSI to feed all bearings and turbo before bunting it over to see if hydro locked in a cylinder or not, without having to pull injectors to verify if any leaks. The engine is very dry and looks good but no guarantees that top of cylinders are not corroded somewhat. Has good exhaust flap on it but condensation is a whole other issue. Would need to suck out bottom of fuel tank and bottom of bevel gear case to get Condensation out. Would be dropping oil pan oil about 15 liters to see how much if any antifreeze in bottom. Seen a runner on Machinery Trader for about $40000.00 of the same era. Other than buying really cheap for parts only, like $5000.00 or less, cause there is no guarantees, Any thoughts would be appreciated. Simon C
I think if the SALT rails didn't leak they might still be OK. Have seen other machines that have been sitting for years get pulled out of the bush and the rails weren't seized up.
Fix the price before you fix the tractor . That motor should have valve lifting gear fitted , you may be able to activate that and turn it over not needing to pump oil through it as well as show up any pots full of water . So long as the dozer has not sunk into the ground the rollers should be alright , pretty well protected by the track frame from the weather . There should be a small water drain at the bottom of the exhaust enough to let out the rain that got past the cap .
Cat also has drain holes in the mufflers. I put a rain cap on the pipe but didn't need to. It's a bigger diameter and just goes around the muffler exit. It's just mounted on the hood.
Yes as epirbalex said it does I believe have a decompressor that would put the liquid out of the cylinders before starting if turning over without fuel. and now that you mentioned it , it does have a drain hole in the exhaust. Waiting to see what kind of dollars he wants. Yes Welder Dave thinking about it now it did have a bigger pipe over the muffler. You are correct. I was evaluating it pretty fast and my wife did take quite a lot of pictures, but your comment reminded me of how it was made. Maybe the Salt tracks are okay , hard to say. Should know in a few days what is going to happen. And yes will fix the price before the tractor. Simon C
SALT tracks will stay in good working condition for many years, unlike the old dry tracks. After all, the track bushing seals are designed to work in dirt, mud and rock on a daily basis.
from an OEM manufacturer based in China: SALT Track chain(41L): 2750 USD/PC Track shoe: 33 USD/ PC SF: 250 USD/PC DF: 275 USD/PC Carrier roller: 120 USD/PC Sprocket gp: 180 USD/PC Idler: 1580 USD/PC Don't know this is still help to ya
Sprocket segments are expensive compared to the rest or is that per set of nine
Yea, it's a sprocket group including 9 segments, if for 1 pc segment then that would be 20 usd
Have been working on 1 Komatsu D155A-1 Engine part time for over 4 months. Had really hard time to get lots of parts. Found so many worn out housings, too many to name. Engine is less than a day from starting. Used the parts from 4 different motors to build this unit. Will post a couple pictures once I get them into my computer. Simon C
Those prices are for purchase in China, and obviously don't include shipping? Shipping costs would be prohibitive, unless you purchased a 20' sea container load. And most Chinese sellers require a minimum order value of around US$5K.
Shipping cost not included, still need the discharge port to offer a accurate freight cost. be able to do business of FCL or LCL, and LCL should not less than 5 Tons. For D155, no speaking of rollers and sprocket, only 2 pcs track groups (or 2pcs track chains + 82pcs track shoes) would reach almost 5 Tons
Shipping is way down from a year or two ago, and ttttdawson can give you the details, arrange shipping ect. I've found the sellers in China can get it to the dock in Long Beach CA with no problems & arrange the broker here who does the rest including getting it on a truck and delivered to your door. It's not all that difficult here. In Canada as far as I can tell your government hates you importing anything and makes it as difficult and expensive as possible. I know, you get free medical. Joe H
Here is 2 shots of my latest project. Way too many hours but finally together. 2 Oil lines, Fuel spill timing and filler with oil and water left to do. Think it is the 8th one I have done. A nice paint job after the running. I have found out that yes tracks are available but many engine parts are no longer available. May yet buy one junker I found , but as was said, would buy new vintage date for building an operating unit. 43 years old is too much in the Komatsu world in my opinion. Simon C
What are your shop walls? Joe H
They were sprayed with some insulation 40-50 years ago, and welding smoke coated it all. Its not my shop but warm to work on their engines. Simon C
Like nicotine on a popcorn ceiling. Warm is good, cold wrenches suck. Joe H
Looks like "Rock Wool" sprayed insulation. Many military installations were coated with the stuff in the 1950's to 1960's. Not asbestos laden at all and very thermally efficient till it starts coming off in sheets..... Had several former radar sites sprayed in it the FAA took over when DOD finished with them.
I believe you are correct with the Rock Wool idea. It hasn't fallen off yet and is a good insulator. And yes we have had minus 16 C already but nice and comfortable in this shop. I stole parts from 5 engines to build this one. You can see a block of one behind one of my pictures. Found out on this job that alot has changed in last 8 years in terms of parts availability. Want to thank those who posted about how to get undercarriage from overseas here and save a large sum if careful. I may yet buy 1 parts machine for the outfit I work part-time for, if we can justify the cost. But anything over 30 years old now is getting on the edge because of new manufacturers ideas about obsolesence. Thanks Simon C
May be obsolete but you can still fix it. When the electronics die in a five year old piece, you can't fix it and in 10 years the dealer won't even consider fixing it. Joe H
Can you give us a rough run down on the parts not available please . Its a pity to have to wreck 5 motors to get one going but guessing they would be in a dozer still going if the were up to speck .
Aftermarket Pistons and Liners, Turbo's, .. No more Fuel injection pump plungers and Barrels anywhere in the world that we know of unless someone has some stashed. Waterpump shafts are no go unless they start manufacturing again. Some PTO parts no more, not even on the computer anymore. I used 5 motors because 2 had big holes in blocks. 2 of 3 camshafts that I sent to machine shop were junk. Some of the cylinder heads were junk, too many cracks. Sent out 10 heads and got 6 back, 3 of them for the motor and the rest for spares for the other dozers. They will soon be a no go, but the company I am doing these for have 6 of these old dozers that plow in electric cables for windmills. Very time consuming engine to do, especially with worn out housings. Simon C
Bit of a worry .
Ooohh, this is good news for me! I have a fully reconditioned Komatsu fuel injection pump that I'd like to get some money for! Maybe if I hang onto it for another 10 years, it will bring "collector" money! Sad to say, for you D155 owners and repairers, this injection pump only fits the S6D140E, found in the WA-500 loader and the GD-825 grader. KOMATSU ZEXEL-BOSCH FUEL INJECTION PUMP - S6D140E - WA500, GD825A - RECOND. | eBay Australia Alternative fuel injection pump numbers are: Bosch 106675-4421. NP-PE 6P120/320RS3S. Local pickup is available. Pickup P/C is 6052. The models of machines and engines this pump fits, are as follows. www.ebay.com.au I've got a few boxes of Komatsu parts, but surprisingly, very little D155 stuff. I guess they really are an old tractor now. The Japanese are pretty ruthless on totally removing any support for old models. A mate has a 1977 Toyota truck, and he wanted a thermostat housing for it (5R engine). I found out that Toyota had not only sent every new part for that model in their warehouses, to scrap - but they also destroyed all the blueprints and factory manuals. It's like the model never existed now. You can get some basic aftermarket engine parts for the 5R, but nothing else.
It's a lot harder to get people to buy new equipment if you are going to facilitate them repairing the stuff they already have, sadly enough they aren't the only manufacturers that share that philosophy.
That S6D140E-2 motor is used in D155-2s from 57001 up , does not say when it changed again but there is the cursed four letter word in brackets noted (emission )

Most of the other 40 year old machines out there have so many worn out components, it isn't funny. Manifolds burnt out, Blocks in worn out condition. They sell perfectly good stuff until you take it apart. That is my experience. Simon C
Agreed. So much equipment that is parted out is so well-worn, you take a major risk buying componentry, without some kind of warranty, or proof of recent overhaul, or actual measurements and photos of the component.
