Hey everyone looking for some advice and diagnostic tips on Komastu D31P-18 dozer. My friends dozer recently had some starter issues and had the starter solenoid replaced after that the start worked great for probably 4 days. Now the starter is just free spinning and not engaging at all. Another weird thing going on soon as you click the key over it will automatically spin the starter also without having the key turned to the start position and wont stop until the switch is in the off position. Thoughts? Also would love to get some wiring diagrams so I can make sue everything is correctly hooked up. Thanks any help would be appreciated!
Japanese machines liked to use different start safeties, and battery disconnects, so I've read. You'll need a wiring diagram at the least to figure that part out if that's involved. How about a picture of what IS hooked up at the starter? usually you just have a signal wire to tell the solenoid to start, and the battery cable, then the cable from the solenoid into the starter body. What was the starter doing before it was replaced? And has it done the free spinning, not engaging, and the turning the starter before start, right from the start with the new starter? or did the new starter ever work correctly?
Removed the signal wire from your starter solenoid. If it still runs with the key on the starter motor is the problem. Sometimes, especially when replacing the solenoid, the strike plate in the solenoid won't sit flat when engaged and the current will arc it together. That is usually dues to improper alignment.
There should be a safety relay sandwiched to the regular solenoid. If it is gone, you have a wiring issue. If it is still there, you still have a wiring issue and possibly an alternator issue as well. What was the original issue with the starter?
