Kubota backhoe dipper crack weld repair

The Kubota tractor with the detachable backhoe cracked the dipper arm. The operator was doing what he normally does which is working on a site with some hard soil, although he admits to a history of "loosening concrete in the washout area" ....although that was a month ago...he said he saw it 'wiggle' and then he sighted the crack. We were called and informed the part would be at the shop. The part was degreased and eyeballed/examined. Noting the crack was through three sides of the arm, it turned 90 degrees as it followed the fourth side, and it was bound due to stretching etc, so we had to first open it up with a thin cutoff wheel and a 4.5" grinder....the last little piece we melted away with the torch. There were no signs of rust or beach marks (fatigue or slow growth crack). I look for that kind of stuff, but saw no clues although the crack face wasn't exposed. Procedure: Tacking the dipper 'ears' to the edge of the truck body (ie table) we are working on and pulling (binding) the crack together with an inexpensive come-a-long....rosebud at the end of the crack to do the heat bend....then we encouraged it (whaled on it) and removed the other direction 'kink' until all that was left was the twist, and the big pipe wrench took care of that. The fit was externally grooved a bit with a pneumatic rotary file. Rod is Lincoln Excalibur 7018 out of a rod oven, size 3/32", welded with an inverter welder (powcon). Back step method and controlled & balanced heat input was used. All welds cleaned hot with a needle /scaler gun independent of slag falling off by itself. The extra patch metal to bridge the crack from: the original stiffener plate to the ears' plates for the ram ....was a pair of longitudinally sectioned and coped 2" square by 3/16" A500 tube steel pieces....it fits better than a piece of angle iron and certainly looks like it belongs there (radius corner). ** We were informed this is the second dipper crack repair, the first one was fixed by replacing the dipper arm. Time will tell. ** This is my first attempt at inserting pictures, the finished painted job is number 6 but can only put five.

Professional looking job! I'm hearing about a lot of these parts cracking on another forum.
