Kubota wheel loader engine smoke?

Katalin ยท 2013-02-26 15:12

Hy guys, i have a kubota wheel loader wich give me a little trouble and i don t know what is the problem.. It is a kubota r 410 with 4 cylinder engine, non turo (year 1993).The problem is taht under heavy pushing it gives i think grey smoke(or it s white but with black smoke from unburned diesel it became grey. The smoke have a little diesel smell.. The smoke coe just under heavy load or if i drove on a slopy road with second gear. The rest of thime, just say when i do backhoe job or running engine in neutral (when reving the engine it gives black smoke but just a leattle wich i think is normal). oil level does not drop\ or not drop noticeable, and the oil press is normal. one thing i notice is that when i unscrew the oil cap (when engine work) there are some ''air pressure" coming out.(i don t know how to name it...). so based from what i tell you what do you think is the problem? Do you think that the valves seal are worn out? Or valves giudes ? Or the piston rings? Or maybe the injection system ? Injectord / injection pump? Thank you guys and sorry for mistakes i learn eanglish from movies.....:notworthy Please give you opinion, so i can figure it out... If you have questions for me i will answer as soon as i can because i am at scool.. Again thank you .Have a nice day.

have you checked the coolant? sounds more like your burning water.

  2. #2Katalin2013-02-27 01:15

The coolant level under ''normal operation" (not heavy load on engine) doesn t appear to drop. And under heavy load if maybe drop i didn t notice ... You suspect that just under heavy load somehow it woud create pressure and burn coolant? I don t put atifreeze beacuse i had some issue with the radiator,i change it with other because with the first one i'd boiled my engine.Maybe it s the head gasket. Thanks for amswer . Other opinions woud be great.

What kind of issues did you have with the radiator? Did you change the radiator because the engine was overheating (did I understand that right)? And are you using plain water now? Then do you drain the water every night? so you wouldn't notice a small water leak. Or do you leave the water in so you are sure that it doesn't leak water? Also, a bad heat gasket can leak pressure into the radiator, causing it to "boil", or even blow a radiator apart. You can check if the water/coolant is bubbling with the engine cold, that would be a sure sign the head gasket is bad, or worse.

Oops! I just read your old thread on the overheating issues. Hopefully you fixed all of the problems you listed in that thread, the fan direction, foam air seals, oil cooler, pressure cap, and antifreeze. Please answer my other questions and hopefully we can help you out. I've heard that these old kubotas can take some obscene abuse and start right back up. It doesn't sound like your's has been abused, more like neglect. You haven't used it with no water, have you?

First of all thank you delmer for your opinion .And now.. The problem with the radiator is old i think .I had this wheel loader for about 2 years now. No heavy usage at all ,maybe 100 hours max since i have it. This wheel loader came with this fault(among others) from the other owner wich like you said abuse and neglect it. So after my dad boght it when i use it for my first job(for myself) on the road home on a sloap the engine start boiling. Then was the first and last time when was boiling since i hade it.I don t know if previous owner boiled the engine butt i'm pretty sure he did.Since i have it i've changed 2 times the engine oil and filters(air oil ,hyd). So like i just said in my old thread ,since then i made miself at home another radiator from a truck radiator because an original radiator here it cost 1000 euros. .... and i'd pay for loader 7000euros.. Radiator shops are hard to find...Even with this ''new ''radiator on slopes the wather temperature rise but i never dove it thill boiling point....from this reason i also suspect the head gasket....Wather in the radiator i dont leave over night because now it s winter ...I never used without wather.. (since i have it) When spring wil come i will let wather in the radiator to see if the level drops.Buble in the radiator doesn't get...I don t know what to do..

Buble in the radiator doesn't get. Do you mean there are no bubbles in the radiator? or that you don't understand what I mean by bubbles in the radiator? Boiling the water one time is no problem. That could be from no foam around the radiator, wrong cap, fan on wrong, fuel issues, etc, etc. If those haven't been fixed, they should be fixed. If the original radiator was plugged up inside, you can clean it fairly easily. Easier than fitting the other radiator, or even sealing the air flow around the other radiator if it's already installed.

why don't you use coolant? it does a lot of good in an engine, it cools more effectively, reduces pitting, lubricates, ect... also you wouldn't have to drain it and refill it all the time possible allowing air pockets in the motor causing hot spots. also if you are draining and refilling the water you don't really have a good way to observe the water level over a period of time and use. it seems like there is water leaking through the head gasket, valve guides, cylinder liner if it has liners. i would run it with a water coolant mixture for a week or so and run it sort of hard so it gets hot and then observe the water level and see if its staying consistent or leaking.

Delmer by bubbles you mean ''escaped '' gases from the cylynder trought head gasket in in the coolant circuit ,no? Or do you mean signs of contamination in wather? Sorry if i don t understand ,my english is crap... If you mean one of the two i didn t see any of it.The original radiator had too many ''tubes'' cut away 20 or so and was in a verry bad condition( slammed, broken fins, hit...)Honestly i don t know how a somehow can do such thing...like it was done intended.. Eric 12 i used coolant but when i made the home made radiator from 145 tubes of the radiator 2 had small leaks and because bad "stick"(i don t know the term). Now those 2 leaks won t leak anymore, they seal themself from changing wather again and again, so i will put antifreeze. I really apreciate your help

I meant the first example, escaped gasses from the cylinder. It's possible that there would be bubbles only when the engine is hot, and worked hard at the same time, but then it's hard to tell if the water is just boiling. Usually if the head gasket is bad, then it will bubble cold, and when it gets really bad it blows the water right out the top. The other cause of smoke is fuel. Maybe worn fuel injectors? or timing? Can you take the injectors out and have them tested? Or try loosening one fuel injection line at a time to tell which one is bad, but it might not make a difference without the heavy load. The air pressure coming out of the oil cap is normal if it's not too much. We call that blowby. Look to see where it comes out when the cap is on, there should be a 2-3 cm tube attached to the engine pointing down, check to see if that's plugged up, bent, missing, or if there is a lot of oil coming out of the tube. It's not unusual for there to be a damp oily area under that tube, but oil shouldn't be running off.

The air pressure comming out of the oil cap in my opinion it is a little on the ''too much ''side. I mean compared with my tractor (wich i bought it from new) its high. That means worn Piston rings? Or valve guides? That tube you say it is there and, at the end of it there are signs of oil vapors. The area where the tube ends is somehow wet, not too mutch but it is. About the fuel injectors.. I use only good diesel. When i bought it the fuel tack was clogged and fuel pump missing. The engine was pulling diesel from a can( unfiltered ) but i didn t run wiht it until i clean the tank and put a fuel pump and filter. So maybe the fuel injector may be worn too ..Too may possibilities. i don t know anybody who test denso injectors and pumps because in my country they're not so popular(here are bosch and delphy). Thanks alot for your help

The blowby doesn't sound too bad. Blowby is mostly from piston rings. You could pull the injectors and while the injectors are out, do a compression test, leak down and add oil to check the rings vs valves. And have the injectors tested at the same time, any diesel shop or creative shade tree mechanic can test injectors. Or if new injectors are cheap enough, just replace them. Sorry for going around and around so much, you don't have an obvious problem, and with all of the crazy things that machine has been through, it could be anything.

) you are right delmer, it coud be realy anything.I think i will use it thill something will crak and then i will see what to do next. Maybe i ll put another engine (from a tractor, 3 cylinder ) since is verry cheap (1000 $) almost new vs 4 or 5000$ original kubota.Apart from heavy pulling(and even then work fine but smoky) this engine work fine. With some modification i will do it.Thanks alot for your help i really apreciate . i forgot. .. i'd put antyfreeze in radiator and the level doesn t drop.At least maybe the head gasket is good. Thanks again
