Liebherr A 316 Litronic makes noise when swinging left or right…

DennisZ · 2014-05-08 05:16

Hi guys, My name is Dennis and i am a new member here. I am a dairy farmer in Portugal but i am Dutch... Anyway, i have a Liebherr wheeled excavator, a 2001 model A 316 Litronic. Since a couple of days it makes a rumbling noise when swinging hard left or right. I don´t think it to be the turntable, more like the swing motor or so. Maybe a bearing in the swingmotor? Anybody have experience with these machines? It has a reservoir for oil for the swing motor, that is at the right level and oil seems to be clean. Is there a way to check out the lower part of it, like where the sprocket touches the turntable? I´m calling it the turntable, don´t know the proper english term for it? But i guess you guys understand what i am saying...

There should be a cover for the trans. Pull the three panels down, it is tight to get in to.Take flash light and you should be able to inspect from there. hope this hepls

What panels are you referring to? I can´t see very much underneath, there is the tranmission and pump, and then above that there is the swiveling part where all the oil lines go to the upper carriage. Used it a bit today, now it almost won´t turn at all. feels like something is locking up. Can it be something loose in the swing brake? This excavator has always (i have it for over 4 1/2 years now) been braking hard when you release the swing lever, my dad has the same excavator back home in Holland and he says that his will continue to swing longer when he lets go of the lever. I´m used to that so i know when to slow down or release, he always has a bit of difficulty in the beginning when he comes here and uses mine. Do you have any schematic drawings or so from the turntable and drive motor etc? Thanks, Dennis

Have you been greasing the inside of the turntable where the swing gear runs?

Yes, every time i pump in like 15 pumps in that 1 grease zerk that lubricates the sprocket like the books says. The other 2 that lubricate the turntable itself get just 5 or 6 pumps. This afternoon i talked to our mechanic back in Holland, he knows my machine, and my fathers as well. He said to drain a little oil from the gearbox and see what comes out. According to him they can accumulate some water in there. If there is water in there the lowest bearing is running in water and likely be shot. So i guess i am going to have to look at that first.

Sorry bout that. We have covers over the trans.

Found out the swing gearbox is shot... Drained the oil the other day and it's full of metal flakes... Haven't had the time yet to take it off, maybe next week. Been preparing our fields and now planting our corn...
