In my diesel and auto class in high school they had a valve out of a train that wasn't that big but very close to it and it just amazed me.
My brother who owned a large metal working shop that did custom fabrication for the oil fields etc told me that they once made a valve grinding and valve seat grinding set of machines to grind the valves in one of the big ships,it was the Queen something or other and said that the valve seat was nearly 3' across. It was many years ago that he told me this and I have forgotten the dimensions now but he said the machines were to be lowered down into the engine room and remain there for the life of the ship as it would only get one valve job before it was retired. He does not have an internet presence and has sold his shop several years ago but I am going to ask him again someday if he remembers anything about it.Ron G
