I am pretty good about not losing stuff i cant remember the last time i lost something but it happens . In the last couple weeks i lost a cordless drill. I use this drill at my home shop and around this farm. I have also lost a pocket knife in the last week or so. It is a cheap knife that was given to me buy a parts place . The knife could be anywhere sense it travels with we every where every day. The drill i havent needed to take it anywhere so it should be in the shop. I will keep looking but i just dont think i will find them. There hasnt been anyone in my shop and it is locked up if i am not in it.
It will turn up. Just found my cordless impact hammer that had been missing for a few days. Found it on the block of my backhoe. I used it to take off the adapter plate for the old muffler and since I went back to oval, I took it off. Found it when I went to change the valve cover gaskets and adjust the valves. Imagine my surprise, when I popped the side panel off, to see a Dewalt cordless hammer. Lol
We're currently missing a chain saw, a fostner drill bit set, and a rosebud torch head. No one has any idea where they are at
A few years ago I started to buy new/replacement tools with bright colored handles such as Milwaukee red handles, Channel blue pliers, or Husky striking tools (pick ax, sledge hammers etc) with yellow handles. If the tool is bright you will see it, and more likely put it away. Forget those all black or dark colored tools especially for outside. I also created areas where the tool belongs, and even before the job was completed if I felt the use of the tool was done then I would put it away. Main problem is as others have said, I forget what I have, or I'm too lazy to get out the best tool. On the other hand, when I ride my bicycle around the neighborhood, I often find nice wrenches on the side of the road!
Missing tools have been a thing for years now. A theory I was told that it's aliens from outer space sneaking in and removing them so they can make copies then when finished return those tools to exactly the same place. So far I've never been able to debunk this theory and those buggers are becoming more prevalent.
If you REALLY cannot find a tool, just buy an exact replacement. As soon as the return window is closed, the original tool will show up.
Look in the drier, it's with the missing sock.
Trust me on this, the chainsaw was missing from the last laborer that left. The Forstner bit set went to his brothers house that is redoing his plumbing. The rosebud tip is jammed in the bottom of the torch cart, you will find it when you change oxygen tanks. YMMV

Newer loan out your paint gun chain saw or cement mixer. As far as lost tools just buy another its called currency for a reason got to keep it going around!
I cant really remember finding a tool that i had lost if i had spent much time looking for it. I wish i could remember the last job i used the drill on. Years ago i did a bunch of work on a truck when i took it for a test drive i think it had a exhaust leak . I used my favorite snap-on ratchet to fix the problem. I took it for another drive test drive . Sometime after that i discovered the ratchet missing i must have left it on the truck. I took the check from working on the truck to the bank and there was a snap-on truck there . I was going to replace the ratchet . He didnt have the exact one but i bought one. I wish i could find one just like the one i had and maybe i will some day. That was about 30 years ago.
I’m the guy who will get out of the truck waiting to back into the paver or get loaded. Or when dropping equipment… You see a lot of things on the shoulder of a road but tools are at the top of the list.
Once pulled over on the bike and found a Seecamp 32acp on the side of the road. Had a little road rash but still works great. One of my favorite summer tools.
I started walking a long the road ways around town as the "rubbies" are living in the bushes on the trails and harassing people. I have been finding tools every time I go out, can believe some of the finds, the good stuff I take to work. started to fill some totes in the garage, have 42 crescent wrench's 8" to 18", full proto 3/8 dr. deep socket set, only missing the 13mm, 1/2 torque wrench 30-250 ft lbs. Look forward to the snow going and getting back out walking, great fun on the weekends.
It would kind of be interesting to know were that stuff is coming from full time mechanics, people doing their own work ?
Im to blame…. Was working on something, had my tool box on the tail gate, forgot and jumped in the truck to go get parts. Took of from the first stop sign making a left and showered the shoulder with the contents of my box. Luckily nothing went into the storm drain. Another time I was in a hurry to get the Mack to the painter, I was taking the tarp power cable off the dump box and left my DeWalt impact on the roof of the truck. I went back to look for it but it was gone. Probably guilty of more…
A friend I worked with lost 2 sawzalls in a month , leaving them on the tailgate and driving off. He had a cover on the box and couldn't see the tailgate and drove off. Sucked but I had to laugh when he lost the 2nd one.
I picked up a Briggs and Stratton Storm Generator off the median on 495 in Mass a couple of years ago. Still running. To the person that didn’t secure that load, you got what you deserve. Could have killed somebody.
I was heading to a job in my 5 yard International dump truck and equipment trailer with a TL130 track loader on it facing backwards. I had put in the loader bucket my Wacker 1550 plate compactor and a 24' excavator bucket. Some how (my fault) the strap got loose and the plate compactor fell off without me knowing it. Later on the bucket fell off but I saw it roll down the hill. A guy that saw it helped me reload it and secure it. I went back to look for the plate compactor but never found it. Either a lucky person found it, or maybe worse it's off the side of the road abandoned in the woods/bushes. The good news is I hated that compactor, and bought a bigger Reversible Mikasa! It did have my company name on it though, so I know it didn't likely caused an accident.
Would be all the above, as quite a bit is tool truck stuff (if it is a bit damaged I have it replaced, I know thats not right but hey ) and then there is the cheap Princess Auto crap. The tools that are to damaged go into 5 gal. pails and used for winter weight in the pickup. Also the truck parts I come across are interesting, u-joint caps, brake disc pads, fuel caps, etc. Lots of shops and trucking/oil field in my area. Have given lots of tools to the apprentices in our shop.
A friend picks up roadkill, says it's usually very tender.
A friend gave me a stihl cutoff saw he found on the road. He saw it slide off and picked it up and tried chasing the guy sown to return it but he wouldnt pull over so I ended up with it. The nose holding the wheel was broken so it sat around my barn for a while. A year or so later I was at another friends house who had found the same saw at the dump with a blown engine , so we combined the two and got one that ran. We also found a husky limbing saw at an intersection must have slid off a fender.
I found my lost pocket knife . I fill kind of dumb it was in the pocket of a pair of insulated coveralls after as much looking I had done. I have often wished i could get coveralls without pockets . When i have them on all together i can have 11 or more pockets and every so often i get one hooked on something. Now if i can find my drill.
Doug, you need some "Cargo" pants!
Here’s a laugh. I own some pricey knives and last year for thanksgiving, we went to my sisters house up north. I wore one of my Pro Tech knives. Evidently, I had a little too much holiday and the wife drove home. I remember fighting with the seat belt trying to lean the seat back. Next day, I’m missing my 350 dollar Pro Tech. Well I took a leak, out back of my sisters house, because they were in the process of building a new house. Looked at some of her Burning Bushes, with hopes of transplanting. Whole bunch of places. Looked everywhere. Drove 2 hours to my sisters house to look where I took a leak, because they couldn’t find it. Always was proud of the fact, I hadn’t lost a pocket knife in 45 years. Have a whole drawer of them but that Pro Tech, I loved. After 2 weeks of looking, I order another one. Week later, a friend gets in my wife’s car and he’s very tall, puts the seat back all the way. Now I had looked in every vehicle, with a flashlight, mind you. Damn knife was clipped on the seat belt, above the cushion thing my wife has on her belts. Pulls the belt out and asks my wife, why is the a switchblade clipped to the seat belt, up by the head rest? Now I have 3 Pro Tech’s
