Lubricate diesel cap?

5030tinkerer · 2021-05-30 16:59

Hey guys - I have a IH175C trac loader that doesn't get used nearly enough. I am finding that it is getting harder and harder to get the fuel cap to come off. You pull up on the lock pin and spin it and spin it, applying downward pressure every 1/16 or so turn in an attempt to get it engage in the sub assembly and then, finally and for no apparent reason, it comes off. The last time it took about 10 minutes of fighting it before it finally came off. WD40? Kroil? Motor oil? Soak it in diesel? All ideas appreciated!

Solvent effect of fuel on lubricants will remove whatever you place on it. May wish to try and locate a better cap as the assist mechanism to loosen it may be bad. Just had to replace the cap on the 963 I normally run as the ‘hammer’ mechanism wore out. Mechanic had to destroy the old one to get it off.

The lock pin needs to go down to engage the sub assembly. Are you saying you're pulling up on it? If so, that's why it spins and spins without doing anything.
