Mangled wheel stud. How to remove?

Ralph ยท 2010-01-16 17:40

Don't think this wheel has been off in a long, long time. One of the nuts turned hard and mangled the end of the stud as well as the nut. There may be enough thread to get a new nut started. But if not, what is involved with getting the old stud out? In other words, how much damage can I do with the big hammer... Thanks!

dont know for sure what type hub you have but if the back of the stud is exposed, just take a hammer and drive it in, should move about a half inch and then fall out.

That's probably all there is to it. Drive it out with a hammer and then install the new one with the lug nut. Pull it in by tightening the nut.

Big Hammer did the trick! Thanks for all the great responces. My first inclination on any job is to grab the Big Hammer. That's why I've learned to ask for advice whenever possible! It was easy. I love that hammer... No excuse to run around with missing lug nuts!

If you get a replacement stud it will be clear what holds it in and how it should be removed. It is just a spline to keep it from spinning in the hole on a tapered shank.Ron G
