Many single axles listed for sale w/ new beds??

There are many single axles listed w/ new beds. It appears guys are buying rental box trucks and converting them to dump trucks. Late model trucks w/ 100k-200k miles w/ Allisons and putting a new body on them. A truck that started life as a dump truck has a renforced double frame? What is your opinion on one of these converted trucks.

a single axle I don't think is as critical double frame as a tdm or larger because your not dealing with the weight. I would be more concerned with the gear ratio and axle rating's

Here in the highly diesel regulated California, am thinking similarly: this is the only way we will be able to pay the cost of replacing our single axle dump when the deadline hammer drops on our world; another idea is to stretch the frame of a single axle tractor and transfer the dump bed onto it. The semi tractor may have more to offer. Gearing is a big point indeed. Axle oscillation is another. FYI If we don't get to at least 2010 emissions we lose our truck operating rights. We can keep it, we just cant run it. "Fun" watching the enviro do gooders inadvertently join the big outfits to overrun the small self employed ones (as usual).

We don't have all those single axle tractors on our side of the country. weight law's different we have to run twin screws to gross any thing. so all we have to chose from is box trucks. there is some city delivery freight tractors but by the time they are sold they have 1,000,000 +miles on them

You beat me to it. The large rental companies replace their single axle box trucks on a set schedule and it supplies cab and chassis to the used market for a variety of uses. These trucks are usually maintained on a certain schedule and are probably the most safest choice in a used market. For a single axle box or flat dump they fit the bill nicely (analyzing the HP, trans and gearing of course). I wouldn't be afraid of buying one of these trucks if they are in good shape and check out mechanically.
