Massey Ferguson 30E

Tom Goskusky ยท 2018-04-25 22:42

I've got a Massey 30E with FEL that's giving me fits. I was cleaning the barn the other day and the power steering quit on me. Then, while I was limping to the shop to check it out, the shuttle shift quit working. I checked hyd fluid and it was full. When I checked the trans fluid I noticed it was low so I added about a gallon or so. That didn't help anything. The loader and 3 pt work as they should but it won't move and it won't steer. I replaced the 2 hyd filters on the right side of tractor and the dealer sold me another one that's about 4" long and 1 1/2" dia. that I have no idea where it goes. Are the transmission and steering all linked to the hyd. system? Someone asked if i checked the pickup screen. Does anyone know where that might be? Or does anyone know what might be causing the trans. and steering to not work when the loader and 3 pt work just fine? Thank you Tom

Tom, I don't know your machine specifically, but I have a 50H. On my machine the FEL and backhoe are separate from the steering. You can figure out a lot by using the www.agocopartsbook.com website. The website is temperamental and wouldn't load for me tonight. Anyway, use the guest sign in option and search for 30E. You will find all the parts breakdowns for the tractor and that may help you figure out your hydraulic system.

I'm thinking the pressure relief valve may be stuck as the plunger appears to be all the way inside the body and when you look in the holes in the side of the body the spring seems to be compressed. Shouldn't it be the other way around to function properly?

Hi Tom - I just arrived at this forum as I have exactly the same issue with the 30E with powershuttle. I've owned the machine for about a year and initially it was working fine and then the steering and drive engagement, intermittently, started getting more and more difficult to the point that neither of them worked. If left for a while (probably randomly) it would start working again for a bit and then fail. Initially I replaced the small filter that you are talking about as it couldn't be cleaned (its positioned horizontally near your left foot as you sit on the tractor). This didnt make any difference and as I didnt know how old the fluid was I then did a complete drain and refill as well as removing and cleaning the other two filters. This seemed to do the job and the steering and drive were back to standard, however, after probably about 20 hours of additional work I now have the same problem again. Long story short I removed the direction shift and control valve to see if there was any obstructions and all looked good. I did notice that there is a "venting" noise that is coming from the front end and the low transmission pressure warning light comes on as I try and engage gear. The steering and drive are fed from the one sump and the loader and backhoe have a separate pump. I am leaning towards removing the pump and going down the same path as you. Did you work out if the valve was stuck? PS I cant find an option of logging into agocoparts as a guest - it is asking me to reach out to a dealer to get a login. Any info appreciated as I am currently stumped....

Reidal, Thanks for sharing your wows as I was starting to think that I'm the only person to have ever had this problem. So far I have changed all the filters, cleaned the pickup screen and refilled with oil. Still nothing. My next attempt is going to be wrapping a rag around a blow gun and trying to put air pressure into the system through the filler hole to force oil into the pump as it seems that the pump won't prime itself. I've had the inlet hose off the pump while the tractor is running and I can see the gears spinning inside so I'm thinking the pump is ok unless there is a seal inside that may be leaking pressure by? If I raise the front wheels off the ground I can get them to steer so I'm wondering if the pump is just worn out? I hate to purchase a new one and find out I have other issues. That's why I'm exploring all avenues first hoping it will be a cheap simple fix. I will keep you posted as to my progress

Hi there, ill update you with anything I find out as well.. Is yours a power shuttle as well? I know the steering pumps are different for Power shuttle and non. I disconnected and removed the pump last night and stripped it down to see if there were any issues with the venting or relief valves. The relief valve looks like a blanked recess on the pump and on mine there is a snap ring (that was difficult to remove) that holds the assembly in place. I think that the relief valve ws initially reluctant to move and is now free but that might just have been wishful thinking. All looked good in there anyway and I closed it back up and fitted it this morning. The tractor now has drive and steering, however, the steering is sluggish as a standstill and its only when drive is engaged and it moves slightly that the steering becomes light. My assumption from this is - either I have partially freed up the venting valve and it is working "better" or while stripping it I have re positioned the seals, which has made it slightly better than before. I'm leaning towards seals in the pump now but having difficulty finding an overhaul kit. one note - when I removed the large hydraulic pipe (the one with the larger bore metal pipe on the top of the pump (if yours is the same) then I could see that the pump was full of oil - was that the same on yours? also since I have done an oil change recently I noticed that the oil did look worked, ie grey whereas the oil in the sump looks as good as new. Still scratching my head. PS if your pump is not priming would that not point to your venting valve being stuck??

Yes, I have a power shuttle trans. I have removed my relief valve and it appeared to be fine. Where is vent that you keep referring to? I put an air hose in the filler hole and the steering kinda worked for a little bit. I'm thinking that my pump is shot. Next step is to remove it and disassemble it and hopefully find somewhere to get it rebuilt.

    Pressure testing, look it up.

Hi Tom - my mistake I kinda mixed up my relief and vent valves in my previous post. The relief valve is one of the large nuts on the housing and has an enclosed spring inside its bore (approx 3/4 diameter) with a couple of holes in the "bolts" shank. The venting valve I am talking about is housed in the thin cover plate furthest away from the flywheel and almost facing the block. Its a recessed hole that looks like a blank but if you depress it it should move a bit as it contains a spring and "some other stuff". I managed to travel about 300 yards before mine gave up again and I only managed to get it back into the shed before it gave up for what looks like for good this time. I'm with you - I think the pump needs overhauled. I have a seal kit that should be coming today so will try that this evening. There isnt really much in the pump to go wrong to be honest and if it isnt blocked then I think seals should fix it... As delmer says there are several documented tests you can do to verify that the pump isnt producing enough and ill go through them step by step if the kit doesnt do anything. The first "easy" test to do is to run the engine and put almost but not quite full lock on and engage first (this means the relief valve doesnt relieve - you should creep forward. Then applying full lock (so that the relief valve is now allowing a relief flow) if it doesnt continue to creep forward then your pump isnt working as expected. I fail this test as I cant get it to move...... also I have a low pressure light on the dash that comes on as soon as I engage drive... Alan

Hi - just by way of an update. I revived and fitted a new seal kit for the pump. The main seals were not heart shaped like the originals but were the correct length to fit in the recesses. With the pump reassembled it had a much "tighter" action. Refitted and after some time I started to get drive again. If I go full lock on the steering then I grind to a halt but by releasing the steering only a fraction I get drive again (which looks like it still points to the pump not operating efficiently. So the machine is operational if not optimal but as I have jobs to do while the son shines Ill use it and do further tests later.

I am looking at buying a ** 30E with Power Shuttle. Someone has tried to wire a toggle witch on the dash and have spliced into the solenoid/switches at the pedals. If I buy it, I want to replace it to stock with new solenoid switches and restore the wiring to the transmission. Can anyone share a source for those replacement solenoid/switches, how many it takes and share a picture of how they mount underneath the pedals? This thing is a mess in that regard but the engine starts and runs well and the FEL works fine. Thank you
