harley thanks for your response appreciate atleast you said something usually where is the serial location plate to this old massey excavator need to direct someone on site
Best guess ..** 450D . What’s your plan with the machine ?
Go easy....folks are here but, as for me, I didn't even know there WAS a ** excavator (that has Samuel L. Jackson interesting implications...). On my CAT I found it on a plate on lower cab area, starboard side under window...and also stamped into the frame covered in lots of mud/dirt....only discovered thru good power washing. A ** SN...no idea. Also, punctuation is your friend...makes what you type more understandable.
Definitely a Hanomag sourced ** excavator. It is an MF450C or an MF450D possibly an MF350C. I'd guess a 450 from the size of the counterweight. Too hard to tell if it std. gauge, narrow gauge or an LC (long undercarriage). Could look for serial number plate in the cab. On the Italian made ** excavators you could see the plate when you opened the door. MF450C has a 4 cylinder Deutz F 4 912 engine. MF450D has a 6 cylinder Perkins 6-354 engine. MF350C had a 4 cylinder Perkins 4-248 engine. Take some pics. from the side showing the whole machine. Vents on the engine compartment behind the cab could also help identify it. The muffler appears to not be original. Does it have an adjustable boom? You could also measure the length of track on the ground to help identify it.
Looks interesting, bet it’s got a whole bunch of stories to tell.
I did not know such a beast existed.
I don't know about the Hanomag sourced ** excavators (** bought Hanomag around 1976) but the ** built excavators (and crawler dozers and loaders) made in Italy were very advanced when they came out in 1967/68. Many thought that ** buying Hanomag was a bad decision that lead to their downfall. My former neighbor bought new ** 450S excavators in 1969 and 1970 as well as a few used ones over the years. He said he put close to 30,000 hours on one of them. They were considered fast and powerful and had 6 way adjustable booms and hydrostatic drive although it was slow. They had a form of joysticks beside the seat. Some later models had pilot controls. They were made till 1978 but the Hanomag units were made into the 80's. I think with the world economy it got where it wasn't profitable to make machines in Italy for export to N. America and other countries. The Hanomag machines were made in Germany.
