Serviced a ZX160 today and noticed some fine metal particles came out of the fuel filter. Has anyone come across this or have an idea where they might be coming from? Thanks
And no, it's not rust.
How many hours on the machine? Are you filling the machine with fuel from the same source all time? If so the metal could be from the pump on the tank you are filling from. If not it might be from the transfer or injection pumps.
Good point. Rob do you have a filter on the outlet side of your transfer pump? If so that should catch any debris from the storage tank and pump and mean you would have an issue on the machine.
Good points Transfer pump on the operator's truck tank does have a filter on it. I'll look there first. There's a small lift pump on the side of the injector pump on the machine. Hope it's not that, looks like a pita to replace.
Opened the fuel tank drain but only saw a few specks. Used the same catch pan, probably didn't get it clean enough. Nothing in the inline fuel screen. Cleaned out the water separater but nothing there either.
Update: Talked to the dealer, the lift pump is a diaphragm type so it's not likely that. He said the injector pump might be going out. Long story short, the operators transfer pump did not have a filter and he let me know the baffle in the tank is broken and he thinks it might be scrapping back and forth- aluminum tank. Just wish I had found something on the tank side of the filter.
If you have other machines fueled by this same operator than I would suspect you will find contamination in those machines fuel filters as well. I don't imagine a fuel tanker truck has a very fine filter that would catch the material your talking about, if that is what you are using to fuel this machines. Maybe a strainer to catch something large like a rag if dropped in the tank accidentally. The baffle in the tank being broken and scrapping the tank is a bit alarming. Eventually it might rub a hole through not to mention he knows it could be contaminating the fuel he is selling. Hopefully he will get it fixed. I just hope he doesn't have to step on the brake really hard some day and find out why the baffles are in the tank to start with. Maybe it's time to find a new fuel supplier before you have bigger problems?
It's just a 100 gal tank in the operator's pickup Scrapper. Going to put a filter on it, needless to say.
Good to see your on top of the situation Rob.:scool
Scrapper does have a point though, if the baffle scrapes long enough it could wear a hole in the tank and then you'd have a real mess!
