Hello, In Motor Grader Braking system manufacture suggest me to use SAE 20W-40/APIGL 4/ZFTF - ML05F oil for disk brake. But i want to use ISO VG 46. So is it feasible oil?
You never gave us a clue about what make of machine, Model of machine, or serial number. Is it a pull grader with brakes or something a little newer? Not all machines are equal.
Its an a Indian OEM machine BEML BG 405A. And axle from Oerlikon Graziano. Service brake is inbuilt in axle.
It's a Komatsu in other words, built under licence in India by BEML. One of our Komatsu experts needs to answer this one. Does the oil specification in your first post come from the machine manual or from somewhere else..?
Actually i have Axle drawings and in that drawings they have mention this oil code.
I would defer to our resident Komatsu experts but IMHO an oil meeting ISO VG46 is too light for axle use. I would be looking at an oil of around ISO 68 viscosity as a minimum and maybe even higher bearing in mond your climate. Also in general ISO VG oils do not contain the additives required for use with "wet" brakes such as are installed in your axle. In fact based on my Cat experience of wet brakes I would be using at minimum an SAE30 oil meeting TO-4 specifications and maybe even an SAE50.
Hello, Actually here in india we are developing new Motor Grader for One of Indian OEM as same as BEML BG405A. In that we are using same Oerlikon Graziano Axle. In that they suggest us to use upper mention oil for service brake. Also In our machine hydraulic system we can use ISO VG 46 Or ISO VG 48. And i refer many machine of different different manufacturers and i mark that all are using same oil in Braking system. Now in Our New developing machine if i use different oil for service brake. Then problem is, i have to set new Pump, Tank and cooling system for Hydraulic Braking system. Kindly suggest me way.
I am not sure I understand this question. Are you talking about a hydraulic oil for operating the hydraulic braking system or are you asking about an oil for lubricating the axle and cooling the brakes..? Please clarify.
I am asking about using Hydraulic oil for operating Hydraulic brake. For Lubricating axle and for cooling brake we are using SAE20W - 40.
OK, now I'm clear. To be honest either an ISO32 or 46 hydraulic oil would do that job. Depending if the hydraulic pump for the brake system required an anti-wear additive would determine if the oil needed to be an AW32 or AW46. 20W-40 API GL for lubricating the axle is far too light in my book, and such an oil does not contain the additives needed for heavy-duty gear work. I would be using either an SAE30 or SAE50 oil meeting TO-4 specification in that application irrespective of what the axle manufacturer says. Don't assume that just because they manufactured the axle they know what the best lubricant is for it in your application. I have come across many cases over the years where we as customers went away from the manufacturer-recommended lubricant and in nearly every case we improved the system performance and reduced wear particle generation.
Ok Thank you. Actually i have forwarded this query to Axle manufacturers. Let see what they suggest. And do you know any manufacturers who manufacture rotor Worm gearbox with Slip clutch?
I should have put a caveat in my last post - "20W-40 API GL for lubricating the axle is far too light in my book" for Indian climatic conditions ........
Actually Axle manufacturers suggest this for Tandem Box and for Main centre axle they suggest SAE80W - 90.
Sounds like typical axle people, they can't see beyond EP oils and probably are not aware that TO-4 exists. The Japanese manufacturers are the same, particularly Hitachi. We changed most of the oils from their EP recommendation to TO-4 and made spectacular improvements in oil condition and life. That said, is TO-4 specification oil readily available in India..?
No, Now day Its easily available in India.
