Local Company owner called as to a comment I made some time back as to 'Helping Out', best intents can be HUGE ass overloaders. Between COVID and lack of ethic in local force he is between rock and hard place, has contractual obligations and asked if would come drive for him, part time, local Quad Axle Dump Truck work, NOTHING Outside the county in a 30 mile radius area. Start this morning 7am ride along and see how the equipment works places need to go, then IF manage to see something worthwhile of me later in week start driving one of the extra trucks on the yard. And YES, is my OWN GD Fault, open mouth insert foot or whatever untasty tidbit happens to evolve.
Always follow the old maxim - "Before engaging mouth, engage brain."
"no good deed goes unpunished"
Look at the positives. Most places have fresh coffee at 5:00 AM.
First day not bad, Kid they had do a trial run and align the dots for places to offload went smooth where he set me on my own after second load(Demo Work). Total four loads of excavated dirt and 6 loads of broken concrete today, finish up a small amount tomorrow at that operation, likely not work Friday. Essentially a Fill In Relief worker. Truck is a Newer Freightliner 114HD, Cummins power eaton 08DLL tranny, have yet to use the Deep Low or Reverse, empty shifts like a four speed in back two gates. Freaky electrical system, wipers will randomly make a swath, engine brake has a mind of its own and determines when will work IF works, actually rides OK for rubber block suspension.
I wouldn't mind a part time gig like that. Handle my own projects and maybe do the occasional hauling for someone else. I could get used to that.
BTW, Started at 7am, stopped by house let dog do his business had lunch then finished up at 4:30, 9 hour day went by in a heartbeat.
You need to change the occupation listed on your bio page Miller............
sounds like a sweet relaxed gig. I did a cash only gig driving a solo for a shady character, for a short while. He did not take care of the equipment to my standards. If not for that I liked the solo driving.
Thanks Nige!! Still retired even as working part time Crop planting is coming on and the people I am helping out need all the hands they can muster
This was the little machine I pushed pedals on at the Demo site hydraulic tailgate, electric tarp air pusher under a smooth bowl body. Single fuel tank is a distance limiter.
Thought would add Have driven Sterlings and was surprised how awful they were as to small component failures This one is on par with Sterling
Small tank = a fella has to pee some time.
Short day yesterday, hauled five loads out one load of road rock in and then worked escort/guard for hauling the 210g to another site, just 7 hours.
Must be rough with these drive-by loading/unloading zones. Just like driving a school bus.
Training of sorts yesterday Escort duty hauling a D6H high track semi U and ripper out to Gasconade MO farm site where shown controls on a late model Trail King hydraulic drop neck and returned it to the yard then rock load hauls to locals and a learning session on self loading from contract sites. Picked up #1 raw clay at a remote site loaded own truck with a older but clean 963B was hustling to make delivery and going back with another driver for a half day(6hours) Saturday to haul more with a different rig. Four heaping buckets full equated to roughly 20t. The raw clay is in rock form predominantly where is used in porcelain to cement to kitty litter. Locals small scale shallow pit mine it where this company hauls it.
Off today, dropped wife's Exploder off at the dealer last night hoped to pick it up this afternoon but not happening. Right fr half shaft self destructing and will not have until Monday so Maybe Tuesday, Wife gets to drive the nasty Pimpala! Boot seal cover on and both seats in the cab while awaiting call from Ford. Got Right seat bolted in place then off to KW for ordered small parts can finish door and seats next week. Have a used bunk heat/ac unit coming out of KC $200 without blower but cores still in it.
Bidness Day today!! Driver I hauled clay with to learn the 963 loaders had to do some make up so AGAIN volunteered for this morning half day! STarted before dawn, retrieve trucks from yard head to pit and I got to make first load out on both trucks, admittedly SLOW a bit intimidated by the speed of the 963 and power to drag out a 3Yd scoop but we made two runs then gave up at some 34t each. The brutes I ran today. + No 1 Clay Pile.
Then back home back on the Beast. And THE Beast, Odie in his favored spot:
That is a nice 963. Can't tell if it's an A painted like a B model or a B model.
very cool! I have not loaded with a crawler in 40 years, and the last one I ran was a 977 with a rake on it, clearing out roots for a nearby golf course construction *30* years ago. The industry here just does not use CL's.
Is a B, have six scattered at materials pull piles throughout the county and two As. Strong Machine, turns on a Dime and will flat drag up 3 ton buckets full.
Most bang for the buck and dependable as it gets for this type work.
Of the 656 CL's for sale on Machinery Trader, 3 are in Washington state, 2 in Oregon, 2 in Idaho. I put in your zip code, and there are 35 for sale in your state alone It is really an out west thing, they just don't show up around here. Very weird and my first dozer was a johnny 350 CL.
Many have changed out to all excavators and clean up CTLs where hard steel track loaders have a unique position at times hard to beat. Now here rubber tire equipment gets the less than acceptable stare, began getting a good foot hold in the 70s then waned back to small scale operations, landscapers, yards where concrete was in prevalence and Quarries. Not all too popular here.
We run both set ups - a real track loader and excavator/CTL's. Each crew has a 25 ton excavator, CTL and trench roller. Our 953, big roller and D5 get shared between the two as needed. For the last year the 953 has been at our dump doing push off duty. IMO a track loader is the best machine to push off a dump as it's much easier to handle the large chunks of concrete and other debris. Starting to see more and more wheel loaders on commercial dirt crews in the city areas. They are not popular at all outside the urban areas until you get to South Alabama where it's all sand.
Not too enjoyable a week. Got the dubious detail to deliver rock to a highway job, Median Delivery at a small river bridge project of Interstate 70. Adding a lane to the bridges before add a third highway lane, traffic is insane, idiots DO NOT, WILL NOT slow for Construction Zones, the three trips in we take the Monfort Lane a MILE away from the project set 4 ways and begin the slow down while MODOT runs a Trucks Entering Leaving Median, USE RIGHT LANE AHEAD Billboard Sign running, Means NADA, ZILCH, BUBKUS where each pass there are morons headlight flashing, bobbing and weaving, flipping the bird etc etc etc and NOT a Cop in Sight. Both of us on project had been tempted to get a new truck for the boss, slam on brakes but chances are these idiots have no insurance. Last two days hauling rock to a fella for a house foundation project, WAY BACK in the woods where the Owls do the Chickens for recreation, narrow SOFT almost a lane wide gravel on clay path, first loads in not bad then moisture started working up in the clay/loaming soil with next loads in leaving couple in deep mash ruts pushing soil and rock to the sides. Yesterday it rained, we were leaving six inch ruts, was dreading the entry to his few acres where the 10" wood posts were JUST wide enough for us to pass, a small bobble or side slip and we were bound to get one but didn't So what was supposed to be 8 loads turned into 14 20t plus with the extra 6 of 2"minus for the road on last passes he was going to spread and walk in with the concrete trucks next week. Just a Slop hole. More work this morning, then 3"-6" toad strangler rains coming in to shut it down. May get the left bed side board I busted with the 963 replaced, And YES I got the damn board!! Fifth load at clay pit third day running there was getting tired and Allis controls Muscle Memory kicked in as to bucket, Cat is Reverse and I dumped when shoulda curled while backing to level load of boulders off and then tapped a L steer which is NOT a brake as the old AC!! Frustrating to say the least. Board was cracked but hanging in until yesterday when I got up in bed and took it completely out Just In Case should let go on its own.
It happens ..... I made the current set out of partially rotted 4x6 that I ripped to 3" because A) the mini will only lift so high B) the mini will only lift so high I did stain them pretty with leftover stain. I expect to cream one well before the age of the wood is a factor
Today was a Rain Delay day. Got board fixed on dump truck, aided another to replace the one he got, then aided in several tire replacements then told to 'Standby' as another driver was taking me on a Education ride along to pickup and deliver cement clay to Hannibal MO. Been raining, driver was late getting back due to clay sticking in trailer. Got herded into truck and we went to stockpile, other driver loading his rig. Clay is Moist, not so much wet but that dangerous plastic GLUE like consistency that will not release from ANY metallic object. Loader bucket a good 1/4 to 1/3 semi permanent loaded, lot looked like a giant had **** everywhere and was squishing thru the rails, track trucks absolutely packed. Get our truck loaded then all hands bail into clearing sticky mess. Hour later bucket cleared, sprocket and upper roller as well idler freed from sticky goo. Get tour of routes to Continental Cement plant, learn to hit scale at Center MO first then move on to the cement plant. ONE truck at a time into stockpile shelter untarp, dump suspensions, open end gate and dump load. Clean off tail area that will hold product, verify trailer is EMPTY, back thru Foley MO pickup concrete rock for local concrete company, deliver and end of day.
DM that's the funniest damn thing I've heard all week! Wife and I laughed our asses off at that line, as we live in the suburbs with an owl that lives in the strip of woods behind our house and the subdivision behind us. The neighbor 3 doors down has a rooster (against city regs like a care.. - I want a chicken coup but boss/wife says no but that's another story) that crows all day. We've heard the owls getting busy at night and the rooster crowing during the day - absolutely hysterical.
Thanks CM Around the four counties we are close in associated there seems to be regions that time has slipped by, we call them ‘lands that time forgot’ and as such the comment as to the Owls crops up in conversations along with the Family Sticks(no limbs or branches) appears too. Reverts to that cousin mother sister aunt wife or cousin father brother uncle same person contexts in rather disconcerting evidentiary roles.
DM that sounds like Chigger Ridge in Cullman County AL. They live in school buses up in those hills and hollers..
They 'live' in all manner shack, barn, converted derelict RVs, old school buses, etc around the four county area and generally with a Tribe of children.
Same trunk of the same tree?
This is one Clay pit we haul from, the excavator is in there, can just make out the top of the boom, 300 series Deere.
So took yesterday Off, Dog to Vet, me to Audiology and picked up my Aids from repair. MUCH better now as can hear again!! This morning started off , OK for a moment, then the Slugs driving 40 on the straights and 55 in corners began, got behind a Slow moving Grove Crane, three DAWDLING 'Old People' fiddle farting around going to the Store(Where they turned off), bears in every hidey hole with traps set and three of us making for the I-70 project yet again. They hauled 14 loads at 22avg ton per load yesterday, we hauled 15 loads of avg 24t today and they need four more in the morning.
Been a different kind of week! Ended last week with removal of a rock fall at one of our local B&B Spa centers up overlooking town, small bluff face decided was time to shear. Several other pieces will likely have to come down too. Going back to retrieve more this morning, have to enter off tenth st in town to back up and around curve to resort close to 1/8 mile. Yesterday had "Bridge Mat' (Shot Rock) to haul to a replacement bridge project not seven miles from our yard and only mile or so from quarry, HOWEVER, had to haul to Opposite Side of the bridge some 12 miles ONE WAY down unpaved secondary county roads, most of the time slimy from light rain and unpredictable shoulder(NONE) where would have to ease over for the dozens of small vehicles using same for a shortcut around bridge. On Google Maps would be Hwy 100 at J to west of Hermann, Bridge project is noted on MODOT Site, then down First Creek rd to Mertens Quarry then further down First Creek to Zastrow Rd(AWFUL) to Hwy F to Hwy J to W end of bridge. Adventure did not stop there, turn around at county road 'wye' intersection to back into site around office/tool trailer and forms on Right to around Terex American on Left down mud bank to deposit Shot Rock, raining pretty well steady all morning. Hauled nine loads with three trucks to where they can set iron in a week or two, rough idea around 260t where I averaged 20t a load. the resort;
The Driveway, Oh and the Manager of the site decided we were getting too close to the Decorative Landscaping so parked her Come On Arrow in the way.
Finally the Bridge work, too busy getting in and out of the hole to get pics Final loads after set mat on W side was back across low water culvert fill and deposit loads for E Side Mat, both other trucks(Sub Contractor) had fun getting out, little Frt Shaker has lockers along with Power Divider and not a issue., Older American on E end, T/Am on W side with a 3110CM Watson.
The bluff face took out two clients cars and massively damaged the Owner's light truck, found they retrieved the pickup and the cars before hammering the rock to bits.
!2 loads each on two trucks today and down to a minimal amount for the excavator operator to use as a pedestal to go after the rock directly behind the cab on my truck in previous photo next. Has a fracture line as the first and has a Cedar root from top to out of the bottom. More haul off and we are to see miserable rains tonight thru tomorrow.
This little rock, green spot is where root bundle appeared.
Back into this haul off this morning as all loose rock is down. As well a unexpected change, owner asked if I thought would care to run a Short Base Tr/Trlr on a Clay haul to Hannibal MO Cement plant. Self Load in Drake MO, haul to delivery site, pick up rock or sand on way back and repeat up to three trips daily. Believe can handle it, so said yes, once again will be My Own Fault. Photos to follow as start this aspect Tuesday. Reason being another driver getting New Truck/trailer combo and will be giving up his short wb rig. And still they have a Unanswered Jobs Posting on a trade site and in local jobs market papers/sites. CANNOT get applicants as most companies here cannot, the ones that do answer hear 'Drug Test' and fail to show up for interviews.
Reminds me about the time a few years back when at the quarry the boss was set to hire a new guy one Monday and he told the guy all he needed to do was to swing by the test place to get tested for drugs. Guys reply was "How about we make an appointment for latter in the week?". One more wasted morning for the boss!
Or then there was at least one guy who showed up for his interview and after talking to the guy boss took him on a tour of the quarry to show him the various parts of the operation. Back at the office guys says: "No thank-you" and gets in his truck and leaves!
Potential new drag
reminds me of training wheels on a pedal bike
They are seldom down
Will expand a bit, Double Wall trailer with additional Full sweep liner, drop axles ONLY go down on straight roads and crossing scales otherwise are Up. Average load out at Clay Stockpile is Two heaping scoops 963B front, then Two Rear then additional two across top of lower loaded material, can see it above bed height is a 'Good' 80K gross weight Wheels for Bridge Formula Crap but trailers designed for Inside Building Dumps.
This was end result of air lift axle failing to raise on the little dump truck Could not get weight off tag so destroyed the blowout.
Around here forgetting to put your drop axle down when loaded is an easy ticket, do you guys just hope for the best or is that standard procedure by everyone there?
We have overzealous DOT Personnel too, just these do not steer so come up to turn or maneuver and Especially unload.
In New York if you raise the axle for a turn it's illegal . Over zealous cops that know this love giving tickets. Not even the truck cops
For us the controls for the drops were always supposed to be outside of the cab. You had to stop the truck in order to lower or raise them. Has that changed?
i'm glad we don't have lift axles here. i understand the principle but they look like a real pain
I believe that's the same way here in New York. I've been out of hauling for a few years now.
Most of the tri-axles here like the red Freightliner DM is driving have the lift axle controls on the dump towner in the cab. I am sure it's illegal to lift the axle for a turn but in my experience the DOT cops let it slide.
They are supposed to be controlled from outside the cab here also, but every dump truck I've ever been in has the controls inside the cab.
I believe that is the law here also but every truck I know of has a switch in the cab.
Not so much a 'Law' as a Desired location by DOT or state controlled, all the trucks even the Tractor Trailer sets are cab controlled here. Only hard mount exterior Dump is suspension dump to unload and release tailgate in MO or IL AFAIK.
Today was a Day Off, had to make a Eye Doc visit, will NOT EVER disregard my eye health with one Iffy and only other one in Good Order. All is Unchanged but did Dilate them, BIG as Dinner Plates and always makes Brightness a BAD Word!! Rain setting in Wednesday/Thursday, will see where the boss desires my efforts next.
It used to be in the Oversize/overweight reg book in the section under "lift axles". It used to read, "outside of cab" or something, but the new book doesn't mention it. I was always concerned about getting dinged for it, but was willing to take the chance vs. getting hung up with drives off the ground and no cab control. Its not in the new book.
Lift switch can be mounted in dash, no rules against that. If your on black ice-lift the axle. At slow speeds it may not turn even at highway speed.
New wagon today as the 40? Something whiny guy left the company on Friday for new gig. He was smoker so truck reeks of Cig Smoke, ash trash full partial Chew spit bottle in cup holder(ALL Weekend) left trash and empty fuel tank as well where burn't bridges generally come back to haunt ya. 2012? Western Star twin to the one I got to use on Second Day, HOWEVER this one is far more Loosened up. Gonna be a test of my endurance of crap to clean and disinfect delouse it then start getting the issues left go too long rectified. Unit 191, twin to this one. Two dash switches for the axles and regulators on Hoist console. 255k on it. Weighs 26500 empty and had a DD13 in it.
For ‘just helping out’ after retirement, I think you have landed in a pretty nice company. Appears you are at least as busy as you want to be! The company I recently retired from, has worked in Hermann off and on. Nice place and generally friendly folks. If you run into a Forrest O., say hi from Mike. I need to make a bike run that way when things warm up around here! I enjoy your posts. Don’t catch all the engine/vehicle numbers ever time but makes a nice read (with pictures).
Forrest and Vickie are friends Wife is a member of the Eagles here and I have been around those two for right at four years now He has been battling with prostate cancer but doing well against it
DMiller, you have good friends! Glad he’s doing better. Have lots of excuses for not getting by the corner tavern to see him but none are very good!
Vickie moved her office, was space renting and the owner sold out. See Forrest on occasion around town not so prevalent anymore but is over 80. Not been to a Eagle's Dinner in awhile due to CV19 shutting them down but may get back to there one of these days. Send my a PM as to last name and company work for!!!
I can't imagine driving loaded trucks in the hills around Herman. As far as the side boards if you load enough they are going to get broke. I haul about anything I can load on my old rough bed. Concrete slabs with the 18000 lb excavator got the last one. The 973 is terrible on boards as one clod rolling out of the bucket will get them.
Haul clay out of mined pit areas all around Hermann, Drake and up to Montgomery County. Hauled loads of Bridge Blanket on Gravel county roads from First Creek Quarry 14 miles around to hwy F then hwy J to a new bridge project. Was NOT easy or fun, old single lane low water crossing Zastrow Rd. off First Creek Rd, nearly no shoulder and if pushed onto those mud base no bottom, the company had one truck roll on this road. Bridge site within eyesight of quarry entrance. Went thru same Crap with Hwy J bridge Montgomery County, Sits at Quarry Rd entrance off Hwy J, had to drive 9 miles around and across Suicide Hill(with a Run ended up in second gear climbing the 8+% grade) with 21t on nearly every load. Connects Hwy K to Hwy J across a ridgeline. Never a dull moment.
I've only worked in Herman one day with a mini ex. Dug a sewer at a old building they were restoring on the west side as you come in from the bridge. Not to bad coming in from Montgomery City with small ex. I've worked at the Nuke a few times, getting equipment in and out of there from Mokane or Fulton isn't the best. I'll stick to the flatter country I live. You know a guy that owns a body shop that just retired in Herman. Marion if I remember right.
Merlin We ride together some Harveys body shop send me a PM on real name as I knew a great deal of the contractors Mike Goff Deb Dubert Benningfield Others you probably worked on the Deutchheim building
Your right Merlin, I did some work for them when they had a place on Mark Twain. Good people. You don't happen to ride with half crazy retired carpenter from Montgomery City named Rod?
Met so many on the annual Toy Ride hard to keep straight but more than likely
BIG change up in Morning, I get to team up with Cain, in old truck 26. Will enlighten with photos after the day is done.
BTW Gary, Merlin says Hi!! As of end of day today, we filled Old #26 to the limit, normal driver was off for VA Doc visit will be back tomorrow.
Oh My! Your trained up on the trash truck now. Bus driving is going to start to look better every day.
Never understood the rear load winch dumpsters when a front loader is so much quicker.
Because on the front loaders, you better not be driving around with your window open and your arm on the door. Have you ever seen what the front of those trucks look like when you've had some wet weather? It ain't pretty, and its all over the front of the truck.
Worked on more of those than wish to remember, BTW, there IS room to step forward of the ejector blade when partially loaded to power vomit then return to the damn pins frozen in place and wrapped in who knows what household waste, in standing liquids that make you wonder if will leave a odor.
Yep I do, regular washing helps with that and the company image. Actually owned one in a trash company I was partners in back in the mid 2000's. We had a tandem axle dual lift hook hoist, a tandem axle hook lift and one single axle hook in addition to our front loader. The front load business was the money maker with the the 20 and 30 CY roll-offs next and the 10-15 CY dumpsters last. Dug this up from the bowels of HEF - HeavyEquipmentForums The garbage business can be very lucrative with the right sales program. We sold that company to a regional waste company in 2010 and my non-compete is long expired...
Pew!
Well the Regular Driver took Monday off AGAIN, and Guess Who gets tagged!! I really do not mind, good break from monotonous dump truck work. Picked up 23 loads of excavated fill moved across town some 3 miles then backed in off a narrow dead end to spread for a NEW single lane almost alleyway on west side of Hermann. Started at 7, ended at 4:45 NO lunch break, just roundy round. Old #26 and tosser Kane, we ride off before dawn tomorrow. Have informed the boss am closing in on max income before SSI cuts way back, not losing my benefit and not pausing either. Needs to get some new bodies started, I was here to help during a rough spot, not permanent.
The truck that picks up at work is a front loader. Uck. I was asked to "tamp down" the dumpster with the mini and it got pretty hung up for the truck driver. I told the guys we have to lighten up on that action EDIT: Dmiller, you were good for helping out and you did have some fun. Time to get back to your projects.
MORE Fun in the house this week. Coming up to Wife's 59th and our 35th anniversary, to which she agreed to go with her sis to visit Sis's Grand daughter and her Great Grands by Brittany, in AZ. Same grand daughter that felt Child Care was too expensive so quit her job that was making her house payment and lost that where also lost health insurance, Had to move in with her 'Boyfriend' George's Mother in Maricopa AZ, George failed to achieve a job to pay the bills even as handbills "Hiring NOW" were everywhere. Anyway, significant birthday(Last of Fifties) and our 35th will be spent here with the dog. That and think on her switch hitting remarks as to the 'Farm', On Again, Off Again. Got all panties in a wad paranoid of the last chance to sell, freaked beyond scared and HAD to back away somewhat ungraciously, now she wants to do it different, JUST Sell the farming ground which she is having issues with understanding Capital Gains, unrecovered assets gains(Barn) but demands we look at selling the bulk of farm. I m NOT OK with this as she seems to be having some kind of swinging whatevers and cannot just decide what to do, I am certain this will not bode well either. Did come to find, that even as SS will stop as cross the $18240) mark once I pass full retirement SS Age I can work for ANY amount of money and SS will no longer be victimized. Best yet is the months lost during this period are added back in then to bring my SS to a different $ level where could actually see a raise.
I guess I don't understand the hurry to sell the farm ground at only 59 years old. If rented out its a secure income, or just have some cows on it. I wouldn't want anyone buying it and having a close neighbor. I'd only sell it if you were moving to a different place. Unless you're going to put all the proceeds into ******* and ride the rocket. Then I totally understand. Seriously, don't sell the farm.
Yes, I do not want to sell, just going thru motions to satisfy her swings.
I hear big loan to family member
Not from my end
This is the Wife's plan, sell 62 Acres, keep 16 and house, pay off mortgage. Impediments to her thinking, taxes to pay for Capital Gain on the land, 15-20%, recovered 'investment' value of barn and fence on land, however most are over ten years old now. She only sees the loan pay off. So OK, then there is no land to use except the 16 acres around the house, I ask that magic question: 'Why then stay living here?' She was perplexed, had not thought of such, is now gone to AZ with Sis In Law and be gone until the 17th. I will not discuss on phone.
Can’t press the “like” on any of this so can only say: Dang! Sorry. Enjoy the short reprieve.
Thanks DMiller makes me glade to be single and dept free but i wish i owned some more land. I have been through stuff like you are going through its no fun.
She ATTEMPTED to start a distanced phone fight this morning, came up with some really off the wall BS as to why it SHOULD be better. Told her not til she gets home.
I sure hope that urge ever comes around here! Only own five acres but have full use of another 4.5 next to use owned by ex-wife who lives in BC, Canada. Not 100% sure why she wants to keep it but at least I have use and get most of my fire wood off it and don't pay property tax on it. Never had a mortgage on the house or property so only thing is school and other taxes. If moved into a apartment or other rental place we would I'm sure be spending more in six months than we do now in a year and not have the privacy we have now! Can not see another house from our property
explain the capital gains exemption for selling land with home in one chunk. 500K for married couple, and you can put receipts of improvements, purchase cost, etc to keep the gain down.
In Alabama 65 and older is exempt from paying property taxes. Any other states the same?
Maybe Alabama should be a state to retire too! Washington state only exempts a portion of property taxes if you are in poverty level status and retired.
Let me clarify that exemption is only for the house you homestead it doesn't include vacation homes or 2nd properties.
In California, the rate you are valued on property tax cannot increase over a certain amount, so senior citizens don't get their property taxed away from them if the county assessor decides the property is worth more. This does not change the fact that property taxes anywhere are basically everyone being forced to rent their property from the government, but that is a discussion for another day.
How does that work on the valuation of the property? So when you turn a certain age whatever the gov't says your house is worth at that time stays that way?
As far as I know, age is no factor, it just starts whenever you buy it. So it incentivizes people not to move around but stay in one place.
Up here the break is paying the school portion of the property tax. Basically seniors living at poverty income can apply for relief from that portion of the payment. The property is still valued the same way as all the rest. I believe in California that the values are only changed when they are sold. If you paid fifty thousand for your house in 1969 and it is now worth five hundred thousand, you only pay on fifty thousand. The purchaser will be assessed at the purchase price they paid.
And that's just for 600 sqft, Property taxes, mine was 1,100 when I bought in 1996, now 3,000.
Mine was around $800 in 1987 and now it is over $5,000 and they upped the assessment this year by $75,000.
Yeah mine jumped 50,000 on my shack.
Man you all are taking a beating where here a 1800sf bungalow with a 1400sf workshop on 9a(Financed) is under $3500 Real Estate tax
My house on 2 lots is just over $300.00.
Sounds like Mo. might be a place to retire to. I wonder if it would be as nice a Costa Rico. Maybe not as many poisonous snakes and bugs?
School bonds.
ANOTHER Bad Day. Started off Rain at 1 am, not just sprinkles, thunder showers, started work at 1/4 to 6 clay haul Again. Get to stockpile and as expected a Mud Mire, load up first load and head out, ended up with 20t on wet and stick to the bed sides stuff, shoveled out excess stickage. Second load better as the rain moved off and the earlier rain was not as deep with the platform doing somewhat well, then the boss added the New Kid, we did 19t and 22.5 t each that load, third load I found a load of wet stuff, 23t, kid got 19.5 and we did the turn, just about to town ALL those damned alarms yet again. DPF loaded AGAIN, tech tried a regen, not good, next up extended regen(4Hr) and I clocked out 1:30pm, left new kid to make one more load then pack the crawler up for the weekend. Phone rang off the wall for the boss while we awaited the first regen, Monday aligned with sand to Concrete co and brown rock screenings back to a local client, both me and the newbie. Needs 8-10 loads where may get 4 first day.
Rain again today, work has slowed SIGNIFICANTLY. Been hauling sand to Concrete suppliers from his brother's Sand Plant along the MO River. Less than $2/ton is what it goes for, we move around 150-200t a day among the trucks and tractor trailers. Costs more to haul than actual cost, the Concrete plants used to haul their own but worker shortage has locked that down for us. Cement companies are slowing or stopping Clay orders, plants need repairs and to do so need to shut down a period of time. Full Tub or frame style trailer drivers get paid by mile, will knock the hell out of their pay a week or two. Grain hauls begin around second week of November as contracts are let by the major elevator companies and farms. Just a month to go.
$2 a ton? That's almost impossible to dig and load it at that price. Just priced concrete sand for backfill around an oil/water separator at a large truck stop and was quoted $14.50 a ton plus $4.00 a ton delivery which is the same cost as 1.5" minus (DGB) delivered. $18.50 a ton is pretty cheap here.
I can buy class II fill sand for around $2.50/ton here. The sand is just a byproduct the local gravel pits have piling up after they screen all the rock out for other uses.
Sand plant runs a dredge here and moves it to Jefferson City alternately to load the sand plant there. Takes about a week to bank set close to a couple thousand ton. Currently $2.10/t The Sand Plant at Old Monroe has been there seemingly forever, large river deposit initially mined as a scraped hole until ground water filled then converted to water jet dredges. Bank seines and sieves to separate to grades a wash plant to remove dirt. Can bank a million tons a month easily. Some of the equipment dates back fifty years or more. Common Sand is $2.35/t Companies drive as far as sixty miles for the Clean Sand as MO river sand has Lignite coal remnants in it. $3.55/t for washed high grade. Capital sand at Washington MO has a screen and wash system close to fifty years old for mason grade sand and ‘Special’ grade MO river concrete sand they sell wholesale at $3.80/t
The less than $2 ton is for those using greater than 200t a week. Discount for volume. One redi mix shop is still using some 200-400t sand per day on big days and 100t a day as a general rule.
Old contact of mine, now in his mid 70s called last night a little miffed and in search of help, told me took several calls to get a phone number to get hold of me wondering if I could help or knew of anyone else. He has used a service for servicing their trucks and HE for the last couple Decades ran by a one time 'Friend' of mine and the guy has gone to receivership. The 'Friend' stole a idea I was working up as to a general service tech company , oil changes, lubes, repair minor lighting or leaks, up to adjusting clutches or brakes, check tire pressures and for flats(Referred to someone else), make recommend lists for actual Repair technicians to perform, stay OUT of deep parts investment/tools investment/dedicated long time in one spot jobs. He never really gained profitability, had a dozen trucks on routes where his overhead was a steadily advancing target just ahead of his profit line margin. In the long run he had failed to Listen in my idea bouncing ramblings of pitfalls and could not lay hands on the notes I made, watched him make the mistakes I HAD noted down as problematic potentials he had not listened to as I had spoken of them. Long Story Longer and MORE Boring, he set up even using the company name I had considered as to a On-Site Service, was in business less than three weeks of a late night run through of my last considered ideas where he quit to take this on 100% in 1989. Instead of buying a or a couple used Service oriented rigs at less than 1/4 the money he invested, he bought THREE right off the bat NEW trucks and had NEW service bodies with NEW Equipment under the covers. The term Go Big or Go Home came to my mind of that time, where he did Not spare a dime, bank loan and all. At first money was OK, he even called once to grind it in he had opened under the base idea I had come up with then we parted ways. My intent was to as noted, buy USED service equipment from fleet duty operations in HE service, a little TLC, upgrade and repairs that myself or a couple well defined mechanics I knew could take on as a side load to the service work, AVOID the Bank to as much as possible until had some cash flow then start expansion. I already had materials contacts to reduce expenses from buying under a new domain contract as he began with, already had a volume of tooling as had the guys I had considered as asking to join up on a percentage base system as sub-contractors (LOWER initial overhead) and then as opened new doors adding some financially expand consolation prize benefits to the original staff and present a draw for next hires. He missed those side bar notes, hired Low Ball could not be less value Newbies, a lot of Liability expenses in first years due to employee damage to missed details that dumped oils or filters were incorrect and failed, etc etc etc. He also missed my notes as to family strain where around the 10th or so year, his wife of some 15 years left him taking house, cars, loads of cash with her, she was HIS High Maintenance in the over all picture!! Well his service is defunct, owes a balance sheet value about half again higher than his entire marketable inventory is worth, owes a recycling company a ton for waste fluids removal disposal, owes a dealership for trucks that have been repo'd and money to a body installer/outfitter he had laid a string to figuring on a Next Loan along with his own trucks tire and materials invoices unpaid, was so deep in hock will possibly not survive as a street urchin. Makes me reflect on Vetech's current employ option with a narrower view!! He was smart enough to open under a LLC, HOWEVER, in the last decade the idiot went to signature PERSONAL Notes to attempt crutching a already failing business, he has lost even his ass now per my old contact friend, where has disappeared from the radar, no one knows where he is currently. Myself, I have NO INTENTION as this age and wear condition to EVEN Consider that type service as a option for retirement, leaving it to the Next gen people that think they will Rule The World. I had no options for the old contact to call, suggested he look to others in his contact files as to competition where they get their work performed, he already had where two are in same bed as he in using this guy's service and the three may be at that point is time to retire ALL of the chaos. Pretty Sad in the general jist of things today.
That's why there's Speedco.
Speedco, where expense is no option!!
I may run/operate old "junk", but I own what I buy without assistance.
Speedco is just probably the most inexpensive of any service outlet. And probably better than most dealers or independent shops and defiantly mobile services. Loves on the other hand is questionable.
I have a map of the lower 48 marking all the bad mobile/road services from Washington to Florida to Pennsylvania in dispatch office-absolute tow it do not call these road services/mobiles. When it costs $900 to almost a $1,000 to have a brake chamber replaced then when it gets to the shop and work is required to correct the improper stroke and aim air hoses-the tows get cheap. In the last year two that lost radiators {$4,900} each. And again go over the work tie up and install bolts that were left out. {Buzzards they are}. If a service truck doesn't have a dealer name on it I don't trust it. Just the way it is.
