Does anyone know why companies like Cat and Volvo have been changing up the numbering of their excavators? For example Volvo went from 330, 360, 460 to 340, 380, 480 and Cat 330, 345, 365, 385 now appears to be 336, 349, 374, 390.

With the constant upgrading the machines get heavier, the new numbers are just reflecting that.
Good day Shaggy650 Originally the numerical digits were supposed to represent the weight (Metric). As most final designs exceeded the weight the policy fell flat hence the amendment. Kind reagrds Uffex
So, if the numbers used to reflect the weight what do they reflect now? I cant find a detailed description on this anywhere... Numbers on side of machine = ??? Thanks
Atleast CAT changed the excavator numbering to better reflect the actual weight of the machine, it now only differs if you add some options as longer stick, longer track and stuff like that to the basic most common configuration.
The numbers with cat's 300 series excavators have always reflected the closest "weight class" that machine falls in. As others have said, as upgrades and changes occurred they gained weight, the change is just to better reflect that. Which is why halfway through the 330d run it was changed to a 336d. There's even a few 345d's that got re-bagged as 349d's before both were upgraded to E models.
