Ok so im sitting here thinking could one that owns a excavator with a thumb do only demolition work but sub everything else out like transportation 2 and from sites, and trucks to haul out debris and yet still make a profit? also if all you own is a excavator how would you go about getting fuel out to your site? all answers would be greatly appreciated.
yea , you can make that work.... they're a couple guys around here that do that. the trucking and stuff you would mark it up ( ex: you get the trucks for$60 you charge the them $70) stuff like that. fuel tank in a pick up is good for say one machine ,but if you got a bunch there you can have a fuel company come by once a week or once a day
Locally, on projects with less than 20,000 sq feet of building hauling debris in roll off cans seems to be the best solution. With a 30 yard roll off you can move them around your site with the excavator. You can really pack them full also. Something you dont always have the time to do when you are loading a truck. Concrete is something that you need to have dump trucks for. There are plenty of guys that will sub to you by the hour. Some may even haul for you by the yard. Around here the guy I work for has a company that he deals with by the yard. Our trucks are a little different here, but a Mi train is rated for 40 cubic yard. We also have the luxury of have a lot of crushers in the area, so hauls are not that far. Even better, if you need fill for the site, you can have the trucks round trip and return with crushed concrete. Most scrap yards will let you use their roll off boxes for scrap metal. They will give you the going rate for metals at the time. I find this is fine for steel/iron. If you have any non ferrous metals, you are farther ahead to haul it on your own, even if it is in the back of your pickup. Or even a small trailer. Non ferrous metals are worth a considerable amount more, and you want to keep track of every pound, as it is worth more. Scrap yards like to dock you for every little thing, not to mention short you here or there when you are not paying attention. This mens they pay less to you, and get the same amount from their buyer. That means more in their pocket.
well thanks guys for the info i really appreciate it but can we keep it going, i would like to just get everyones opinions and ideas on this. thanks
My cousin more or less does what your looking at. He has a Cat 320BL, A Cat D5, Cat 420D IT, and a Mack 10 Wheeler. He has a pickup with a fuel tank. Whenever he takes down a building he hires the 100 yard demo trailers to haul the wood debris away and when it comes to the concrete he usually rents a few tri axles. I personally think that is the best way to do it. He seems to do good for himself.
Trucking and excavation are 2 seperate trades. The federal government is making sure that it is ONLY practical to specialize. It is soo expensive nowadays to PROPERLY register a real truck, that you must operate it 8 hours a day to profit - and you better have your logbook. Gone are the days of towing your shovel to the job with a triaxle with the temp tags - do that now and you are going to Rikers Island.
ok so your saying a guy that leases a excavator and a skid steer possibly? could make a living doing it this way?
