Buddy over in IL has a 1965 Dodge(HACK, GAG, COUGH!!!!) D500 was his Dads, old Farm truck with all the issues of a Old Farm Sits Forever truck. Clutch is Hydraulic, lines all rotted away, he took that apart several YEARS ago where transplanted a small 4BT Cummins to replace the Slant Six Chrysler while made firewall adjustments. So bought a NEW master Cylinder, came with a NPT threaded fitting in the box and has for several weeks tried to make the clutch work, will NOT stop leaking. Asked him to find a 1/2/20 bolt, see if that would thread into the cylinder. Told him then IF fits go BACK to CARQUEST, buy a Banjo bolt kit and a Banjo/Flared Fitting head, then buy a line to fit. He said I was stupid as they sent the fitting with it so repeated the instructions. JUST called me back, cussing. CARQUEST is closed until Monday but will be headed there come Monday Morning as I was correct.
Nice! Would like to see a picture of that 65 dodge with a 4bt now.
He owes me one, already asked for.
What is he going to use the truck for?. Must be special or for what the engine is worth he could have got a good Chevy.
I like those mid 60’s D500’s think they are kind of cool looking. They sort of had that let’s go to work look about them.
Yeah, then he could fix it like this fella did.
Said he got it out of a "Bread Box" Delivery truck that was wrecked and sold at a auction yard. Believe it to have been a laundry service by what colors he described, all white with a narrow band of stripes down the sides, name labels had been removed. He scrapped the body for aluminum and had the running gear intended to use it for a hay bale collector but frame was bent, rear axle housing also bent and third member destroyed once got it apart. Then he remembered the Dead Dodge. Was a Snow Season Interstate Victim accordioned in a mass pile up.
Gets Better as I dropped this little gem in buddies lap: How much speed is he expecting from the old truck. The response was same as when was gas. Told him NOPE, not gonna fly and he needed to figure his ratios. When I stopped laughing at his call this morning as he was ALL mixed up on eng/road speed calcs we sat down to figuring. At 63mph the old SS was taxed to max(IIRC the medium truck version topped at 3400rpm), so close to 6.0+/- High side of two speed ratio on the 9.0x20s, a little fast calc and the 4BT will be near to 60% of the SS speed at ground, asked him if could deal with 40mph top end to which said NO. He is reconsidering what has done so far, truck may be done for good now.
Nah... 428 CJ would be poetic justice!
Potāto, potato. 6 of one, half dozen of the other. As long as it doesn't have a piece of Chevy under the hood
LOL! I concur. Small Blocks are handy for jamming in pre 35 street cars. Mostly because they are short and fit... usually.
Alot of work was done with small block chevys back in the day, that was when you had to know the engine, and have some skill and put some effort in to make it go fast, so a fast car was somewhat of a badge of skill and effort, not everyone could have it. Now order some electrical download crap off the internet that your parents pay for and anyone can have a hotrod skills or not, a buddy of mine calls it checkbook racing.
I put a 350 in my 1970 IH 1700 loadstar were it did have a 392. I had to cut a hole in the firewall for the dist. The 392 is shorter. One big reason small blocks are jammed into old cars is the most older cars had a rear oil pump and oil sump like the small block. I was thinking about puting a 318 in my chevy one time they are like the small blocks they can out live there bodys.
Well good news on the clutch, fittings worked, leaks gone. Bad news I was incorrect on road speed: 37mph on the rug. His next thought is find a differential that can work and leave the 4BT or dig out a 440 he has hidden away and begin again. His Dad is in a home, trying to make it functional enough for another ride, maybe even use it once in awhile
The differential in the Bread Wagon was a 4:11 Ratio on 19.5 Tires, 5 Speed OD Trans, reused the Dodge/NP Trans in his swap. Dumazz is looking now for a old SA two ton single speed diff with at least a 4:10 in it!!! Said almost not moving in Low on Low side with engine on Governor!!! 7.?? ratio on low side Diff. Crusty old Truck gonna cost him a FORTUNE!!!
Current conditions, truck sits out in yard, No Hood, No 4BT, Trans hanging on a chain loop, 440 had mouse nests all over and IN it is seized tight, bread truck remnants are junk and money has run out, 4BT being sold to another fella with another Bread Truck. My bud said MAYBE after harvest will get back on it but doubted it would ever run on its own again.
