Two threads merged here. Since they're slightly different in the details, I left both posts.
In my 2000 f450, the turn signal/wiper/ headlight dim stalk is kinda getting bad. If you wiggle the stalk between dim/ bright, the wipers work. In the wrong spot, they won't .
More than ten years ago, I had a 92 F350 that had the wiper motor magnets fall off the motor housing and stick to the armature, so about the same age on the truck at the time, JBweld stuck them back in place. For all I know the same wiper motor could be in yours. I think there was some internal rust contributing in my case.
Wipers are run off the GEM module which is the back of the fuse box there is a known problem of a windshield leak that goes strait into the computer so it the fuses show any signs of moisture and corrosion take it out and try to dry it Of course it could be a bad motor too unfortunately its one of those over complicated systems
GEM Module died on my '99, what a PITA to determine as to NOT allowing 4WD to engage then could not get other functions to work, a serious deficiency in engineering.
Very common issue among several ford models, if you have ANY other weird things going on (radio, heater, lighting issues,etc...)then this would be my first suspect I have fixed a couple vehicles (can't remember if they were ford or chev??) where the intermittent cutout switch in the wiper motor was only contacting intermittently can you whack the motor/gerabox with a hammer or steel rod? don't hit it too hard or you'll knock the magnets loose like delmer mentions
Ford always used more parts to do the same job. Now, they all seem to compete to complicate things that worked well enough before.
thks digger ok to delete one or both ( foul up)
all good info tks. guys . have an idea the motor fell apart 3 other people say that's the most likely
