Found this on a towing forum. No telling what else they will find in that trash pile!
A bit of WD-40 and some paint.... it'll be just like new.
Hey, be careful with that, you might bend something Looks like a Letarneau ( spelling ) cable control
thats good scrap metal....why waste it?
I heard it even spun over on the first try
I'm working on a site in Pittsburgh where we're building houses on top of a slag dump. It was active from the 20s through the 70s, and it's 120 feet deep. I know a guy that worked there while they were dumping, and he says it's a fact that there's a dozer buried there, somewhere around where they were in the late 50s. It's also rumored that there's a railroad locomotive or three buried there too....
Treasure ? Looks like a Cat D7-7M , built 1940-'44 . US Army surplus maybe ? If it was a Cat 60 or 65 would be worth $$$$ .
wow looks like some of my adventures, just add snow, LOL more info please. thansk KoO Published Author
There are plenty of stories like this, doesnt matter where you live. The local one here is as follows. While building I-75 through Saginaw MI the crew was digging a borrow pit that was to be turned into a lake. This lake sits out in front of Deplhi, steering gear plant. Towards the end of a shift a D9 got stuck in the bottom of the borrow. They didnt have a machine there to pull it out. Plan was to get it in the morning. Came back the next morning to find the dozer was under water. Supposedly its still there. Not sure on truth of the story, but I hear it come up time to time
Turbo, you are very true in what you say,a 25 ton O&K track machine, I think its a RH6 lies sunk in a bog 7-8 miles from my house. The first motorway built in Ireland, the M1 supposedly has a D8 as part of its foudations as well as various tipper lorries and other machines. The Dept. of Agriculture has lost an amazing amount of stuff over the years including a new D3 sunk in a peat bog up north-don't even think about it-the bog has no bottom!! There is a yard in Portadown with a lot of early Fiat dozers buried in it-apparently there was a Fiat agency based there. Neil
One of the first machines i drove was a D7 of this vintage. Only, that particular machine had had a coversion to hydraulic blade and a proper cab with a heater and wind-down windows. It was however very short of power and was easily ´choked´ I remember one time when the pony engine had stopped working, that we had a truck pushing it to start. I accidentally put in forward instead of reverse gear and the engine acually started and ran backwards! I didn´t think that was possible
I'll bet it was buried by someone who wanted to play the ultimate practical joke!
New to the forum here. Thats pretty cool, and good scrap metal. You should see where i live. I live in the middle of the anthracite coal region in north east pa. I can walk up behind my house to the top of the mountain and look over some of the open mine pits and they are burring equipment as i type, they dug the pits so deep they couldnt get back out and now they are reclaiming them with the ash and burring everything in there. The one pit here has over 20 drag lines couple d9 - d11s and some haul trucks in it just sittin there and havent been touched since the 80s and they are half covered with water.
My uncle lives in a small town that there is supposedly a cat dozer buried right under where main street is now. The story goes that when they were building the tow, they built it on bog, and they quit for the day, next morning the cat was just about gone. The guys went to get some equipment to TRY to get it out and by the time they were back, it was gone! Around that area there is supposed to be quite a few old cats, and skidders sitting around in the bush too, some half buried, some broke down and just left there. One of these days when i get a quad im gonna get my uncle to take me out quadding so i can see some of this stuff.
We have a whole park built around a Komatsu dozer that got sunk in the peat bog. There’s a boardwalk through the bog leading to the dozer, all you can see is 2’ of the ROPS sticking up from the bog. Story is that when the Alex Fraser Bridge ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alex_Fraser_Bridge ) was being built someone tried to steal a new Komatsu dozer. When it was discovered stuck in a nature reserve, someone got the idea to leave it there and build a board walk along the path the machine made.
Are there no access roads left? With the price of scrap, its surprising they would leave hundreds of tons of machines in the pit. I remember reading a story on a dam project in China. 4 D-10s were used in constructing deep foundations for the main dam body. They were in charge of pushing material to a clam-shell bucket which was attached on a tower crane. They dug their own graves, and were way to deep to ever be retrieved, so now they are encased in the concrete foundations of the dam. They also all had auto lube systems on them....WHY if they knew they would only have them for a short time. i wouldn't have evne changed the oil in them!! My father also told me a story of one of the local big coal mines losing a D-11 in a mud slide. He was out at the mine the next day, and they had their main stripping shovel probing the muck. He asked what they were doing, and they were searching for the lost machine with the bucket of the shovel. The machine could never be located, and was given up for lost.
Wow...D-10's with auto-lube? Lot of mines and contracotrs over here would be dying to get at those. Haven't you seen all the pics of equipment sitting around eastern PA over on the stripmine message board? Drive through Berlin, CT along Route 9 and in a pond, there is the tip of a steam shovel that used to dig around the brickyards there. It hit a spring one day and they couldn't stop the flow from it so it was left for dead. Probably a lot more equipment down there as there were once 30 different brick companies in the area. Also a rumor of a local contractor that buried a shovel and two dump trucks in his hillside. No mention of the Big Hog (B-E 3850B shovel) in Kentucky that got buried?
see if you can hunt up those links for me. maybe that was before my time on the site. I have Keith Haddock's books with lots of pics about the big hog. I wish I could post them in here for the guys to see.

i bet you could fix it king
yes, it will take a couple of beers and some old diesel fuel for sure, LOL thansk KoO Published Author
looks like a cat d7 to me
mitchell2905, where are you from in southern Illinois? I am in West Frankfort
Just sitting there? If that stuff is just sitting in a pit somewhere seems like a guy with some ingenuity would be able to do some salvage. Does anyone actually claim the equipment? I'll bet a little love and coaxing could get some of the stuff out. KoO what say you? A quest? It irks me seeing stuff left laying like that. Never waste anything is my motto. well that and hit it till it breaks. :bash
ya know if you dig a little deeper and a little further to the left, you´ll find the truck and the trailer it was sitting on
I'm located in carbondale for the next year or so. Let me know if you want to go equipment hunting one day. I know some spots around the area.
We have some here ourselfs, but yeah get ahold of me. I am working up by Chester right now, been through M-Boro twice a day everyday
By the way, My godfather was a welding boss on the Captain. was there from Birth to death. myspace.com/knuklhd:drinkup:drinkup:drinkup Sounds like a road trip!!!!!!!
