Over-heating issue

Dirtworks87 ยท 2022-07-07 17:55

I have a 2017 volvo 220e with 2630 hours on it. It has recently started to run hot and I'm at lost on what the problem is. Coolant level is good, filters are good. Radiator has been blown and washed out. I can hear the fan come on. At start up in the mornings, it'll run for about 2 hours, maybe 3, depending on the work load, after that working the machine at a decent pace, it'll slowly start to over heat. Never reaching red or warning lights. Once it gets to this point, if you return the machine to idle and let sit for 10-15 seconds, temp goes back to normal operating range. Any help would greatly be appreciated. Thanks

Do you have a photo tachometer? It could be that the pwm valve that controls the fan speed isn't working properly.

Look through it with light on the other side. It's very hard to get a radiator clean once it's got some dust and chaff packed in. Or, use a non contact thermometer to check the thermostat housing and water pump inlet to see what the temperature difference is between the coolant going to the radiator and coming back. Does it really cool off that much in 10-15 SECONDS? that will make it hard to see the operating temps of the radiator, unless you could get somebody to operate, then take the temps as they dig.

Any idea of where this valve is?

Yes it really does. It baffles me

Volvo only sells the complete valve and block. So you really need to test your fan speeds before you replace it. I think we sell ours for around 1200 bucks. Run your temp gun test to see how efficiently your cooling system is running. Tomorrow I can get you the fan speed information and the thermostat information. I believe that your model the thermostat opens at 195 degrees farenheit.

Thanks bigwrench. That would be great

Cooling fan specifications: Low idle: standard Cooling package 640 rpm Low idle: tropical cooling package 700 rpm High idle: standard cooling package 1600 rpm High idle: tropical cooling package 1800 rpm Standard vs tropical cooling is a software parameter and nothing else. Only the dealer can change that. Old thermostat part number (21773551) Begins to open @ 181*F Fully open @ 203* F New thermostat part number (23884715) Begins to open @ 190*F Fully open @ 208*F
