I am new to large equipment. I recently purchased 955L to clear a mountain. 955 looked in decent shape but now that I use it under load after about 30 mins. the gauge second from left (i think its trans. temp.) over heats in the red. A friend told me could be torque converter or low trans. fluid. Everything runs fine pushes good but over heats? I have no idea what i am doing so I needed help. is it torque converter if so how much is it to fix something like that. how do you even check trans. fluid
make sure the fan belt is tight. should not be able to turn fan without engine turning too.
If my gauges are in the proper order the torque converter (trans.) temperature is on the far right. Second from left is the engine coolant temp.
There is a trans. oil cooler attached to the engine cooling system. Report back with both engine and trans. readings to help troubleshoot the problem.
If it is the transmission, the first thing i would do is change the filter.
Rather than put a new torque on the machine - the first thing you should do is check that the transmission oil cooler is not blocked externally. It might also be a good idea to fit a new transmission filter and change the oil. If the filter is blocked it will bypass and generate heat.
The gauge shows it is over heating but are you sure the gauge is working correctly. I agree with the other post but mine were pretty much shot. Replaced all the gauges on my 955L a short time ago, the torque converter was the hardest but was easy enough.
The first thing to do is clean the magnetic screen then change the trans filter and cut it open. Look for any metal in them, metal means something is coming apart inside. If all is good sofar, get a hose and 600 Psi gauge with a 9/16 NF thread stor boss fitting to go into the filter top to check pump pressure. Get the trans warm then check and recore the pump pressure at high and low idle in neutral. Also check at low throttle in each gear(123F&R) Look for a big pressure drop at low throttle. Most torque overheating is low oil flow. If pressure at low throttle doesn't drop more than 10% from high throttle the pump and system is sound. Then take off the LH engine side cover and carefully feel the TC cooler lines up to the block by the frame near the rad and then beyond the block. If you find a cool line beyond the block change the temp and pressure bypass valve that screws into the bottom of the block. Later Bob
