owatonna mustang 330 skidsteer “spark problem”

username43 ยท 2014-10-06 14:56

ok.. i was left a owatonna 330 skid steer from my father.. one day it just stopped working.. he never diagnosed it, just left it there. well i wanted to get it running again. i have no knowledge of this tractor, no manual or anything, just using my automotive skills in diagnosing it. i bought new plugs, wires, coil, condensor an i still have no spark. took the cover off the points and also pulled plug out to see if there was a spark an nothing. but put a screw driver on the points and it seems like its getting power to there because it started arcing. a wire that came from the + terminal on battery to the ignition switch came off but i just back together by twisting the wires, i know not the best but i thought it would work to at least get it to start. so my main question is, what else is left on this ignition sytem seems like the i trouble shooted or bought new of the ignition system. any information would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

As I recall those engines (Onan right?) had an issue with something wearing and then the points failed to open. Make sure as you rotate the engine the points open and close, and check the point gap. With a spark plug pulled and grounded, short the points with a screwdriver again, check for spark. When it arcs at the points it should give you hot spark at the plugs. Oh, and I think you need both plugs connected to get spark, I may be wrong but I think that's how these worked, both plugs fire at the same time, goes to ground on both ends. Sometimes the points will get an oil fim on them and won't conduct also. Just some thoughts.

Well went back an tried working on it again. Seems like a weak spark now after trying to clean points.. But maybe they aren't opening up to what they should be at possibly could be what you were talking about where the round out. So if that's the case, new points should do it or is it something different. Also do you know what I should set them too? Thank you for the help

Check that you have over 12V at the coil positive. And the resistance of the primary and secondary windings

    Coil wire, mabe.

As a guess, is it a CCK engine? 20 thousandths on the points and 25 on the plugs. That's a tight plug gap, I would guess it's like that because it has to jump both plug gaps at the same time maybe.

Well here's an update. It runs!! On one cylinder.. Its not the wires or coil all is good... Imma do a compression test tomorrow hopefully an see if it's good.

Well the verdict was both valves were stuck open the intake semi work stuck at times an the exhaust was stuck open the whole time. Cleaned it up ran hydraulic fluid on the exhaust valve cause well I had to take a hose off to get the head off, used it as lubricant. Worked out quite well haha now runs like a champ! :drinkup
