Parts crossover

Tylerharris · 2023-05-20 10:46

Hey guys, Anybody have a good source to crossover parts? I have an early 70s w14 case loader and need a starter motor. Theres nothing special about the motor, it’s almost identical to the one i just put in my jetta. Im willing to bet theres a matching one at any auto parts store but how do i cross it over? Thanks

If it has a tag on it that would help Otherwise I would usually start with googling and comparing pics if you can post a pic in here that would help to 24Volt probaly and a tooth count helps too when your looking One idea I assume its a gear reduction unit if its similar to your jetta Amazon.com: NEW 24 Volt STARTER CASE 621 621B W14 W14C WHEEL LOADER 1987566C1 17391 : Automotive Buy NEW 24 Volt STARTER CASE 621 621B W14 W14C WHEEL LOADER 1987566C1 17391: Starters - Amazon.com ✓ FREE DELIVERY possible on eligible purchases www.amazon.com

The original W14 starter would have been a 24V Delco-Remy. I don't think your Jetta would be 24V? Here's some cross-reference numbers from Rare Electrical. Start with the Case part number or the number off the starter motor tag as Jonas302 says. A Delco number off the tag (if the original is a Delco-Remy) is a good start, cross-references for Delco-Remy are easier to come by. 24V Starter Motor Case Wheel Loader 600 800 825 Skid King W14 W14H 336 Diesel 6359, 4997*5, Starter, 1113403, 1113403, 1113479, 1113481, 1113486, 1113534 www.rareelectrical.com

Not that it is of much help but here's what I found about W14 Loader TractorData.com J.I. Case W-14 tractor engine information www.tractordata.com And then this: Amazon.com: NEW 24 Volt STARTER CASE 621 621B W14 W14C WHEEL LOADER 1987566C1 17391 : Automotive Buy NEW 24 Volt STARTER CASE 621 621B W14 W14C WHEEL LOADER 1987566C1 17391: Starters - Amazon.com ✓ FREE DELIVERY possible on eligible purchases www.amazon.com Not saying that starter is any good just posting what a quick search online comes up with!

Zero tag or numbers of any sort on the assembly. The part that case recommends is nothing like this one. I only need the motor but will buy the whole assembly of course if thats what it takes. The motor is 9 tooth and the gear reduction assembly is 10 tooth. It is possible that its supposed to be 24V but its wired as 12V.

The motor in your URL is the same one that case recommends. And after writing the original post i realized that the PN they recommend is nothing like the one i have. Theres zero info on the part i have as far as part numbers or anything. My jetta is not 24v…but neither is my loader. Its running two 12V batteries in parallel so im not sure if someone previously switched it to 12V for whatever reason or if its a bastardized loader that case doesnt supply part drawings for.

The amazon one looks very similar…like not a direct match but something that would cross over. But mine is wired as 12V so thats throwing me off

  8. #8Tylerharris2023-05-21 11:30

That amazon one in your reply looks like it could definitely be a match except its 24v…

    What engine do you have

this one looks similar I am just throwing ideas check it carefully https://www.amazon.com/Reduction-Starter-Massey-Tooth-Replaces/dp/B01M8L4W4K

That looks like a match. Thank you! Unfortunately im pressed for time but now that i have a number to work with i will try to cross it to something i can buy locally

  12. #12Jonas3022023-05-21 15:06

Yes it would be nice to get it locally so you can do a visual match before buying

Typical problem with old machines that someone has replaced a starter with a different one than the OEM. That 12 volt reduction starter you took out was someone's attempt to make the engine easier to start. IMHO The Case parts book shows a remanufactured starter as #104212A2R . You can replace it with new reduction one that is offered on ebay for $167.94. eBay Link A new 24 volt Delco Remy will cost about $500.00 .

Unable to cross it to a part in a parts store…this one consistently pops up as a crossover match though. I may have to give this a try. Physically bigger and it has the solenoid on it so definetly different but it does look like the mounting is the same… https://www.oreillyauto.com/detail/c/wilson/wilson-starter/wil0/91014310n?q=101-419AS&pos=0

I don't know if you found one yet. But keep in mind it is critical that the number of teeth and the distance from the mounting flange surface to the end of the starter nose has to be the same as the OEM. Sorry the link I posted was a dud. Is your old one rebuildable ?

  16. #16Tylerharris2023-05-24 09:47

I’m sure it can be rebuilt but i was on a tight timeline so didn’t want to go that route. I brought the old one to a case parts store and asked them to blindly match it and they were able to so I’m all good now. The guy was pretty sure the actual starter that i have is off a Cummins so somebody apparently swapped it at some point

A lot of people read these threads looking for help. Could you post the part number of the new one ?
