The Strip Mine I worked at in the early 1970's had two of them. I spent a few months in them and I liked it. We worked 10 hrs. per day 6 days a week and everything was operated as hard and fast as it would go. I really don't remember any problems with them. A real blast going down a muddy haul road empty. The tail end would want to swap ends real fast with you sometimes. We kept pretty good berms on each side of the roads to help keep them from going off the sides. They had V-16 Detroits and were a darn tuff outfit. dpull

The pros- 4 wheel drive, but only in 1st or reverse. 50 ton plus payload. Low load height-can be loaded with a 980 or simailar sized front end loader. The cons- Leaf spring suspesion-better have a smooth haul road or a good mechanic to swap out busted springs. The front end was built to handle a 35 ton load, so the king pins and tie rod ends are a huge failure point. They ride like a buck board wagon. The brakes suck. The cab is no bigger than a washing machine. You have to shift each gear-its not a fully automatic. They are slow comapred to any other 50 tonner. Oh, dont forget when some one shows up expecting to see a 773 or 769 or a wiggle waggon of some type, they usally turn around and leave. Kinda hard to find drivers for them.

They came with either a 16V71 engine or a V12 Cummins both of which made for lots of heat and noise in the cab. The wiring was crap and I changed out many rear drive axles and final drives when the ground was either soft or steep. They were OK for awhile but hell to keep running after they got around 5,000 hours.
