Now, now, Turbo. Play nice! Even tho a Cat will dig circles around a Komatsu..........
Geez!!!! Getting pretty testy in this thread. All I know is that Komatsu is starting to make some serious inroads in the Excavator market in Northeast Ohio. Cat is still the market leader around here in the area of Dozers and Wheel Loaders, but I am seeing an increasing amount of Komatsu Excvators. Can we get some operators to weigh in on this thread? Is it about controls? Is it about speed? I am just a parts guy but would be very interested in hearing the operators thoughts.
it's all in good fun,i am an operator the only komatsu's i have ran are a pc 200 and a pc 400 i have ran cat hoes most of my career the old 235's and 245's were tough machines and the 385 is an awesome machine.sorry redot getting off course here.any pics of the recovery?
For anyone interested, from what the old factory guys tell me, the "PC" designation comes from the Japanese factory drawings originally labelled as "Power Crane". Those were the original drawings which eventually became the first Dash-1 excavators in the early 80's. Ask anyone that's run the Komatsu excavators for any length of time...they will give the new Cats a run for their money any day of the week. Cat still does make better work boots than Komatsu, though... Tony
brought another 600 in the next day, dug her out and then put a cable around the lifting eye between the tracks, right under the house. then while one guy walked back the other guy pulled himself out..machine came out very muddy but healthy!!
thank you, i really was wondering what the pc stand for.
Holy crap! Looks like your getting into my kind of work with all that mud! I bet that beast sunk like a rock. Although I do have the question of what were you planning on doing when you got to the water? Glad you got her out
Did the foreman or operator take any heat over this, looks real bad. Nice picks.
dirtman- here was the plan: if you look at the 2nd pic in the post you'll see a reasonably straight ditch untill it wobbles to the right.that was my first "unbackfilled groundwater inspection hole..that was left open over a week..15ft deep " as i got close enough to it i used my spoil to replace the water, of course as i filled it in my spoil displaced the water all over the place, making the footing very muddy and unsafe for my gradechecker, who ended up falling on his ass a few times..lol.. ..but it worked fine and i was able to continue the trench with no problems to the machine. As i got about 30-50ft away from the one you see in the 2nd set of pics i figured i'd cut a trench as deep as my trap (trapazoidal)bucket would let me without leaving overhangs or under cutting my tracks.it was working fine..i got rid of about 5ft of water and i thought as i got close enough the spoil i put in the hole would cause the remaining water to rise up to the trench i dug, flow out under me to the big trench i eas digging, therefore keeping the exsisting ground around me dry for my gradechecker.unknown to me was because the original hole was open for so long the sand layer the groundwater ran through was all washed out and there was a hell of a undermine i was backing up to..you know the rest anyways the machine is all right. i shut it down before it sucked water, we dug it out and gave it a bath i was working under a project manager at the time, it was a go,go,go job and i did not know about the holes untill i could see them with my eyes..the proper way would have been to pump out the holes and backfill them way before i got there but that wasnt done
I don't know, Ohio Cat has one heck of a reputation around NE Ohio. Columbus Equipment I have hear is pretty good too, service wise. Our excavating sub has Cats, New hollands and Kubota's. So Its between Ohio Cat and Akron tractor for them. Eslich Wrecking does a fair amount with Columbus Equipment, I think they are starting to move more towards Komatsu's from their old Cats.
cool pics
